How far back can you go with your own ancestry?

I don’t mean what a website can tell you when you send them spit.

Proven documents and recorded family history.

Literally 3 generations... Such a shame that none of my forefathers chose to record anything

I can go about 4, but poor family, just too many kids and to many stories lost to the wars.

That seems to be about right. Why is that? Writing and recording history goes back thousands of years. Stories about a census by Caesar etc.

My family on my moms maternal side can trace ourselves back to the plantation my grandma’s grandfather owned and my grandmas grandmother knew the Native American tribe who purchased her mother & father.

My moms paternal side can only trace itself back to the family that purchased my grandfather’s grandfather.

My dad’s side is Nigerian, the Biafra-Nigerian war made it difficult to trace back any farther than the generation before Christianity.

Late 1500’s for me. Lots of German biologists, chemists, and university professors 😎

Someone in my family spent years doing this and we have 8 level tree

I have family members who have done a lot of research, it takes time and easy to get "false data" into your stories. I can go back 3-4 generations on my dad's side, but there was an adoption so hard to trace. On my mom's side, we trace back many generations coming to the US and back to Italy. I made some connections on an ancestry site (not based on DNA) that connected back many many generations, but I am not certain it is correctly linked to my ancestors.

On the DNA side, while I would not recommend it due to Chinese data mining and worse, I did do it and we found a previously unknow to us 1st cousin of my mom!
