Very nice. Let’s see his critiques of Zelensky.

I will provide in exchange for your critiques of Putin

Innumerable. He’s a dictator. Russia isn’t a democracy or republic. He kills journalists, dissidents, and businessmen. But that doesn’t make Zelensky’s actions acceptable. What about the human rights of Ukrainians? Where’s the HRF for the young (and now also quite old) men who are being sent to the abattoir against their will by Zelensky? Where’s the democracy in Ukraine? Elections? Free press? Is the HRF calling for peace or decrying any of that?

We already had this exchange last year Alex, or do you not remember? I tried so hard to keep that thread civil, despite the rude interjectors, because I respected you for your work on the World Bank and IMF.

But you chose to act in bad faith, abuse Straw Mans, gaslight, cherry pick, and ultimately block me. It was the most disturbing experience of my life, not just because of your glaring double standards for Zelensky and Putin, but how you used manipulative tactics in ways that were wildly incongruous with your consistently dignified behavior that I’ve seen on numerous podcasts. All over this one particular issue. I’m confident that I tripped over something, I just don’t know exactly what.

The simplest and most likely explanation is that your employer, Garry Kasparov the chairman of the HRF, has set the tone for the HRF: no significant criticism of Ukraine and Zelensky is allowed. Diversion tactics are to be deployed to always bring the conversation back to how bad Putin is.

Obviously, you already denied this claim that Karsparov won’t allow you to speak freely or logically about Ukraine. Even if you won’t admit it, I understand your predicament and feel sorry for you that your speech is constrained in this way. Maybe you think the tradeoff is worth it for you, so you can work on Bitcoin initiatives with the HRF and continue to expose the World Bank and IMF, all of which is work that I admire and applaud. I could respect that choice.

Moving forward, the more important thread now is: does you being compromised on Ukraine imply that any other aspects of your work are also compromised? Will your relationship with Kasparov’s HRF create new double standards and inconsistencies on Bitcoin, especially as Bitcoin becomes more geopolitically relevant?

I’d love to be proven wrong and there’s a simple way to do that: post an article or note about Zelensky’s dictatorial efforts, like seizing the bank accounts of those who try to avoid conscription. There’s a free Bitcoin tie in for you.

I’d sleep much easier at night knowing that such a prominent Bitcoiner is not compromised and is able to speak freely.

Newsflash: Kasparov stepped down and is no longer HRF chairman. Just happened in the past few weeks.

Anyway: Appreciate you outlining some of Putin’s downsides — they extend considerably to massive war crimes, attacks on children’s hospitals, civilian power and water infrastructure, etc

As for Z: IMO (personal view) there is Martial Law in Ukraine not because Zelenskyy is some power-hungry dictator but because the country was invaded by and is each day destroyed by a much larger military force

I am against conscription in general, especially for foreign wars and wars of choice. My father was conscripted to fight in Vietnam which was lunacy. But if someone invaded my home town I would find it hard to judge my community or government if they wanted to enact conscription to defend the land.

I am also against financial restrictions when it comes to forex, gold, or bitcoin, some of which have come to pass in Ukraine (and I’ve shared these btw on Twitter)

As far as elections, again I find it hard to question the status quo. Should a country just proceed as normal if it is being all-out attacked? This isn’t some fake war, Russia has tens of thousands of troops on Ukrainian territory. Today. Murdering and killing innocents. I have seen polls indicating that the public doesn’t want an election until the war is over. I would be happy to see elections but again I understand why they are not proceeding as normal.

I wish these abnormal things did not occur. But realistically Ukraine has two choices: fight for its own survival, or submit to Russian military occupation. I do not judge them for fighting back.

I am happy to unblock you on X if you want, just DM me your handle

We will see in 5 years when his term is up.

Where is the video? This is an nbcnews article

A true bitcoiner would threaten them with free market competition and no tax. Nothing brings down prices faster than that

That wouldn’t surprise me much either. I didn’t even do a cursory check of the news so who knows with how much lying there is going on. Would be happy to hear it’s nonsense. I’ll take some time this afternoon to check into it. If you have any other links they’d be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks, that’s all I could find this morning. Need someone actually on the ground there.

Interesting times we live in.

It's not fake. It's been reported by Spanish speaking independent people I know and fully trust.

And I can also say I've been warning about Bukele for a long while now. I speak Spanish and get the full meaning of all he says, and access to much more stuff than is reported to US-centric audiences.

Can you provide links to the independent reports? Do they write?

This is catching a lot of us English speakers by complete surprise.

What other warning signs were you referencing? For example what are some other policies or bad decisions that made you start warning people about Bukele?

There's this video from a highly reputed Spanish libertarian professor/media guy (there are maybe only a couple in the whole country, really), about this last incident:

https://youtu.be/77Rm8QXpfEw

And Bukele doesn't have any policies, that's the thing. This is basically one of the first times he seems to be about to act politically, and he chiose to do this.

His excuse until now is that he's been busy with the gangs, which I myself have publicly said here was a valid reason... with an expiry date. I have given him a pass all along and said that I hoped he would turn out OK. I didn't have a prejudice against him and I couldn't care less about the allegations that the Western media make about him.

In the meantime, every time he has spoken about his social outlook, it's been always clear he's just a run of the mill authoritarian conservative. Now he has decided to start acting like one too, so that's when I stop giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Interesting, thanks for the perspective

I’m not sure he marketed his government in the libertarian way like Milei did though.

Either way, price controls will obviously fail.

Oh, absolutely. He never did. My beef is not with Bukele (other than the fact he's a conservative authoritarian), but with all the "libertarians" who for some reason insist Bukele is one of them. That includes perhaps most of all bitcoiners, who even those who reject the label, are factual libertarians.

Interesting, and I agree on core principle. However I think there might be an ascendant “Plato’s Republican” idea in Bitcoin-

I’m not saying I agree with it. But I have to admit the limits of the sheep and their susceptibility to the socialist machine.

Are we not to help provide them a better opportunity in life?

These questions are being discussed now

Absolute power corrupts absolutely

It’s just a matter of time

When did NBC become a news agency?

Judging all nations and cultures by one standard of "muh hUmaN rights" is overly simplistic, IMO. Libertarianism is nice in theory but fails in practice.

Also, this privided some nice context/nuance, I think: https://x.com/twocitizenships/status/1810084313230147672

Doesn't change the fact that price controls only make the problem worse, and that all the evidence we have shows this.
