If you want your kids to be able to read cursive just teach them yourself. Don't wait for school to teach your kids anything that's important and vital life skills. The whole point is to have them be able to follow orders, be a good employee, do as their told, don't question.

It's an interesting point you raise nevertheless about not losing knowledge and skills. I just raised it in my family and my teen immediately looked up the US Declaration of Independence and started reading it (he's not American though 😄). I've never "taught" him cursive tbf as he's unschooled and and he's in charge of his own learning. He's never been to school and has an insatiable desire for learning, as he's never had the curiosity, thirst for knowledge and love of learning knocked out of him.
