People are looking to move their groups and communities off of Meta. They know about bluesky, so they think it might be a solution, but that’s not what bluesky’s trying to do. This is a group, Americans in NZ, which probably isn’t ever going to have a deplatforming issue, but they want their own space. We could be building that with Nostr.

Get them over here! 💜💜💜 What can I do to help?

Still blows my mind how few have heard of Nostr 🙄

I think we need really simple ways of groups / forums so folks could use nostr, but not need to know they’re using nostr. They start with the simple needs, i want to talk about being an immigrant from the US to NZ… then as they use it, they discover that the group can do live streams, or a marketplace, or events calendar for meetups, or their own feed of social media posts, or videos like Olas…

i wonder if we're getting close here with Chachi or Flotilla. it's not forums, but it's like Discord or Telegram.

Yeah those work. But the thing is when folks join one of these we bury them in information about Nostr. We need a gradual on ramp where they don’t need to know the app they’re using is different.

I *believe* you can't use flotilla without sats, which adds a further obstacle if you're speaking to people on zero sats.

We need onboarding. That's the largest hurdle.

I’ve seen this notion cropping up as well- a pdf + png that walks someone through the following would be a useful handout:

1) setting up a community relay (including a non-self hosted relay-as-a-service) they can gate access to where

2) members can DM each other and

3) make public posts, and

4) can be moderated

I had the same problem when I was trying to convince a group to move here. The facilities aren't currently here. The group I was talking to had previously be on a discord, left for guild (a discord clone) and ended up moving from there to matrix.

I think a phpBB clone would be amazing.

Hopefully not written in PHP

don't you say mean things about PHP! my LAMP server from 20 years ago will beat you up!

A lot of the social web is on forum apps in php running on old LAMP servers. :)

we've talked about phpbb before. i think Will was even a fan of it. we just need someone to build it :P

Let make a zapcrowdfund, however delivers a working forum client gets the prize:)

Wow these typos.

My friends at https://www.bamboocreative.nz submitted an OpenSats funding request to migrate their forum software to Nostr. But they didn’t get it, probably because they didn’t have much in the way of running code for the port yet. It’s a good idea.

Yes, this is a huge opportunity! So many small community volunteer groups use Facebook groups. Very few alternatives to help get them off there.
