I had to migrate the 'computer centre' from my old shop to home today.Ā Ā It went badly.Ā Ā Arch is a sod. Using NAT to jigger getting the max IPs from a /30 has done my head in.Ā Ā But I'm back online!Ā Ā Photos of the new expanded home-lab may follow once tidied up......

Need a beer!

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

End of an era. :( Closing after 26 years. Cookability, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, UK.

Another round of hires of UK ex-polititians by the US big tech firms, accompanied by subservient admiration of those firms by the current government crop.

The current crop happens to be Labour, but it makes no difference. Universal corruption.

My disdain for these politicians is unbounded. Moral disdain for their corruptability, but also political & strategic disdain for their stupidity and their disregard for the consequences of their actions.

A minor sign of hope: some scrutiny coming from the UK parliamentary committees.

Good writing by the Guardian's Robert Booth.

Oh dear. USA. Really sorry about the quality of our exports. Maybe tightening your immigration controls would help. ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Here in UK it's #totp 1988 and that makes people happy. :)

RSS

It’s the plumbing of the web: essential, reliable, and routinely underestimated.

Well. I'm not sure what a leftist is or does. I'm a small business owner. Most of my friends are too. Does that count? Probably not. Your presumptions seem either clouded or confused. As for Bluesky, my account there has been suspended, so that assumption is unfounded. But it goes someway to answer your last question. This network has potential but it's just seems to be an unwelcoming place to hang out right now especially if you can't freely express yourself.

Yep, well you sound like one, given your tone, intervening in minor discourse and obviously monitoring activity. But also demonstrating a low tolerance for dissent and quickly trying to shut down a differing opinion. All comes across as bossy, self-appointed moderator type behaviour which erodes trust, clearly discourages newcomers and stifles healthy debate. You could have just chosen to walk on by..... or engaged in a constructive debate...... But you chose to take on the role of tone police/moderator.....

So in defending the premise of the network you attempt to police my speech....... lol. Would you have bothered to reply if I'd shit posted, or would you just have walked on by?

Maybe you've just demonstrated why this network is a firehose of bitcoin/scammy/christian/libertarian stuff? Everyone else has just taken the hint.

Freedom of expression fuels democracy, but it isn’t limitless. Laws that curb hate, incitement, or denial of historic atrocities—like Germany’s—protect public order and vulnerable groups. True liberty balances robust speech with responsible limits, ensuring open debate doesn’t become a weapon against anyone.

That's how it is in the EU. You're welcome to disagree with it, but this is how the people of the EU have chosen to develop their democracies.

Never heard of it. But I have experienced having gentian violet applied to a face wound in the 70's. Not sure what its medical qualities were but it was a potent dye.

It’s wild how grammar and punctuation have been sliding for decades, and then AI shows up promising to improve people’s writing—cleaner punctuation, better phrasing, the whole thing. But now the moment someone uses an ellipsis, an em-dash, or even a pre-AI turn of phrase, people scream ā€œAI-generated!ā€ as if creativity suddenly died in 2023.

So what happens? People start intentionally dumbing down their writing to ā€œsound humanā€ā€”dropping letters, misspelling on purpose, leaning into this bizarre redneck-meets-valley-girl shorthand… all to avoid being accused of using the very tools that were supposed to elevate them.

Meanwhile... vibe coding is widely celebrated as a way to boost productivity, riff new ideas, and accelerate creativity without outsourcing a thing—yet proper writing is treated like a suspicious artifact.

Don’t let any machine think for you. A tool is a tool. If you hand over every part of your mind—coding, writing, reasoning—to a system, that’s not empowerment, that’s dependency. Writers have used ghostwriters for decades. Students have used Grammarly for faster checks. None of that made them less human. It just made the workflow easier… as long as they stayed in the driver’s seat.

Idiocracy really is at hand.

We have tools that could resurrect proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar—and instead there’s a social reward for sounding like you flunked eighth-grade English.

Not me.

Aside from a few modern conventions—using ā€œIā€ sparingly to avoid sounding like a narcissist, or using some degree of shorthand in private texts for efficiency—I’m going to keep writing properly. I’m going to keep using full sentences. I wrote this way long before AI, and writing has always been one of my strongest skills. I refuse to degrade it for anyone or anything.

It's been and gone. I used to install it. A1Mb/s twisted pair network system.

Hery Mat and I'd probably snigger for the rest of the date.

Nostr focuses on censorship resistance with privacy as an afterthought, while tools like SimpleX focus on anonymity and privacy. Do not confuse the two.

Not every Nostr client or relay implements the same NIPs. NIPs are optional by design—relays choose which ones to support, and client implementations vary. You could set up a private mute list on Amethyst only to find it doesn't carry over when you switch to another client that implements it differently or not at all.

As for messaging: NIP-17's "optional forward secrecy" refers to disappearing messages via expiration tags—not cryptographic forward secrecy. NIP-17 doesn't solve forward secrecy or post-compromise security.

If your Nostr private key is compromised, all your DMs (past and future) can be decrypted because the same key is used throughout. SimpleX doesn't have this vulnerability because it uses no persistent user identifiers. In serious privacy circles, SimpleX is consistently the recommendation.

I know SimpleX recently became controversial with the Bitcoin maxis on Nostr with their Community Vouchers launch, but the underlying protocol and privacy architecture remain technically sound.

There's nothing wrong with using Nostr non-anonymously—but understand what you're using it for. This isn't Reddit.

I firmly believe in and teach privacy and security through isolation and compartmentalization. Use the right tool for the right job. If you want censorship-resistant public discourse, use Nostr. If you need anonymous private communication, use SimpleX.

Treating Nostr like an anonymous platform when censorship resistance is its focus with privacy as an afterthought is a fundamental misunderstanding of the core purpose of the protocol.

and if you're looking at SimpleX check out Cwtch.

I used to be the only person in the office with a Soundblaster card. A distinct advantage! ipx/spx network too, I don't think dos had an TCP/IP stack back then.

I used to eat that sort of thing with impunity when I was younger. Even though I'm relatively fit, not overweight and don't smoke, I had two heart attacks recently. I nearly didn't make 60. :(

Staying somewhere posh tonight!

I thought it meant 'call me' ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Using some nostr clients it's made difficult to like posts, let alone dislike! e.g. forced use of an emoji rather than just tapping a heart.

The thing is; you ain't going to see any growth when people's first experience is; a firehose of bitcoin/scammy/christian/libertarian stuff that's really in need of moderation... That's pretty much what people see, like it or not. I'd say most, if not all, just say wtf, I'm missing nothing here and never return.

And people that have tried a bit harder say they've been fleeced transferring crypto to sats with even the popular wallets compounding the scammy perception.

It's going to be a difficult base to grow from imho.

The teaching of Black and Minority Ethnic history and racism is compulsory in Wales, yet it is not a mandatory part of the curriculum in the rest of the UK.

Why's that?
