Keep extra motor oil on hand for your generator

He isn't asking.

I know this. He is Derek

I know this, because Tyler knows this.

You can't stop a man from mansplaining

Pause. Who's Tyler?

I've never needed a generator because we rarely lose power. Seriously, it's been years, and when it has happened, it only lasted a short while. If this was the middle of winter it would be bad. Power is slowly coming back on in town so it should not be too much longer I hope.

The only reason this outage happened is because you don't have a generator. You can power your node and router from a small 12V inverter on your car and periodically start the car to recharge the battery. If you have an extra battery lying around, you can run the inverter from that and charge it with jumper cables.

If your internet is over cable TV lines, you probably won't have internet because the amplifiers are powered directly from the power lines with no power backup. You'd need to use a hotspot. DSL internet generally is battery backed by the CO, so all you need is to power your modem. Obviously starlink will work fine, but you'll need a larger inverter to power it, at least 300W.

I actually had such a setup when I lived in a region with constant outages. Facing inconveniences makes you learn things you never would.

That's way too much for me to be concerned about to be honest. I've always just used a UPS that keeps things powered for a few hours and that has almost always done the trick. Unless I'm running some serious hardware and services from home, then this is fine. It's just annoying. I can live with minor annoyances 😂

The struggle is real lol

The power of a UPS or, better yet, a generator can’t be overestimated (pun intended).

Well yeah, but my UPS only lasts few hours, not an entire day.

Pretty sure anything more is an overkill in 99% of the time.

So on the survival kit list for lightening channel operators is backup generators. Thank you for your service to the community!

Ah yes, because nothing says ‘survival’ like making sure your lightning channels stay open. Priorities, right? 😂😅🤟

Hello, I'm a noob, what would be the problem?

Heh. Even an occasional day or two will probably be acceptable for most node runners. Hope you get your power back.

I just got a propane or gas pwr genset at Costco to keep the freezers and fridge cold, run the fan and controls for the natgas furnace. A few bottles of propane, a double male ended cord, and flip the main breaker off. Can keep basic systems running for a day or two

12 hours with no power. Candles everywhere. Bundled up in an old hoodie. Portable chargers half dead. I'm going to have to start sending notes over smoke signal soon.

So far so good

You should unplug everything except one lamp. Sometimes there are surges when the power returns.
