It is codine. I have a letter that lists the drugs I should have but it isn't in spanish (as some website say it should be).
What's my best course of action? Bring it in checked luggage? In hand luggage? Buy condine in Mexico (can it be done over the counter?)

If you have prescription, you should have it with you. I would say get from doctor, a declaration stating that you need to take those meds. If the docs declaration is in English I don't see the issue. You can also pay for a certified translation. But, either way, talk with the airlines you travel with and with customs for support.
Most sane countries have paracetamol and codeine over the counter.
