Unpopular opinion: Nostr's social media takeover is far from certain. The chances that it will only develop into a niche platform are greater than it taking over all of social media like some influencers are claiming (because it's the cool thing to say?) #[1]

It either is disruptive (which I believe) then it’s success is inevitable.

Or it isn’t.

Honestly I don’t care if normies and sinfluencers see any value in it at all. Fewer shitvertizing won’t hurt either because of a more limited audience. As Satoshee said many years ago, he was afraid of too rapid adoption bringing unintended consequences. I’m happy to see the monumental rise of #nostr taper off a bit. Most people don’t understand freedom of speech anyway - and certainly don’t value it. Let those people stay where they are, in their pod.

I totally agree.

It's disruptive for the group that most benefits from it (people that want to speak their mind without censorship). That's awesome of course but normies usually just care about convenience, pop culture and want heavy moderation. They won't all of the sudden embrace a platform where everyone can say anything after being protected by moderation from big tech. Especially if nostr will be smeared by MSM.

huh, interesting 🤔

to see your opinion fully - can you define the reasons for it to become more a niche platform?

bc all i can see in nostr socials now are numerous possibilities for future expansion and growth (like how decentralisation and inability to ban will bring people here from government-regulated socials, and how relays probably are going to be more sphere/topic oriented and that’ll create more bubble-ish spaces - exactly how audiences love it)

Normies usually go for convencience, heavy moderation and where pop culture leads them. Nostrs big selling point is freedom of speech, privacy and decentralization. Normies mostly don't care about that. Especially lefties want censorship. Mainstream media also shunnes platforms with no moderation. Just because we love nostr and see the potential doesn't mean everyone else will.

You can of course say fuck em we don't want those people here anyway. But then you have to accept that nostr won't overtake the big centralized social media sites.

oh, i see!

i do think that we need “normies” here tho 😤

as a person living in a dictatorship, i can tell how even the most uninterested generic public get tired of government-controlled socials, tries to avoid using them and seeking for alternatives.

with time more and more people realise that – it happens when person’s point of view suddenly becomes not-welcomed in those curated socials. and the stricter government acts, the quicker the transition to uncontrolled socials wilhappen.

now, to all the things people will miss and want from not-controlled socials: those are headaches for creators of nostr clients and apps – they should care of how to make it more intuitive, easy to use, quick and secure and etc.

i have mentioned how people would stay on their theme-related relays – this is how i see censorship issue resolved – because it’ll be the relay problem to manage the notes and decide which one should and which one shouldn’t be posted.

but i liked your statement of “mainstream media avoid platforms with no moderation” - not because i think nostr needs to be promoted, but because it can made it – well – a reputation 🥴

Absolutely. I admit I still might have too much of a western view where opinions aren't as surpressed like they are in some countries. Free speech platforms gain in importance for normies the more it is surpressed because the need arises. In countries like yours I could see nostr become a big tool for people to communicate. Just not for the Western world unless they start censoring so much that even normies would notice.

nah, your opinion is also valid, since we haven’t such a precedent yet! that’s still up to debate if – or then – western communities will also arise

but i still have big hopes – because actually in nature the famous boiling flog situation doesn’t happen
