Bitcoin is not a mystic thing, it’s a math thing.

One of the big traps I see people falling into is making Bitcoin more than what it really is - it’s a technological innovation, not a religious innovation.

This does not take away from Bitcoin; I’m obsessed with Bitcoin because of what it can enable and more importantly, make obsolete.

As for Bitcoin becoming a mystical movement, or ‘religion’, I want no part of that.

While in India, I learned that history is repeating itself. The Jain religion, which values life and total non-violence, was never intended to be a religion. But because of their inviolable values, the Jains ended up being the storage and clearing houses for the traders, along the many tributaries of the Silk Road route. Using the architecture of the time, they built ‘temples’ to house the administrative processes, and before they know it, ‘poof’, it became yet another religious destination, and by association, became a religion. The traders liked it, but there was nothing better to back your promises and IOUs than a religion.

Bitcoin is on a similar trajectory. That’s ok, but I avoid anything that treats Bitcoin as mystical, and just focus on Bitcoin as technical.

Anything that's not understood by it's fundamentals has a risk of becoming a target for the 'explainers' /priest class/ unfortunately BTC is no different.

Yup, you got that right. When I discovered Bitcoin, I went down to the number theory instead of a mystic trajectory.

Fermat’s Little Theorem FTW!

the way it wakes you and allows you to see the fiat matrix is a pretty fucking spiritual experience

Totally.

It’s not dissimilar to what Martin Luther went through, and then her used the printing press for religious shitposting (they didn’t call it that in 1517).

Math is the closest we have to the language of God.

What also blows me away, is that recent research in cognitive linguistics (Edward Gibson) has discovered that math engages an entirely different part of the brain than language. I am anxiously awaiting Gibson’s upcoming book, ‘Syntax’

Bitcoin is more clearly defined than math. The protocol isn’t special. It’s what it means to humans that make it special.

It’s a mistake to make it more than it is.

It’s also mistake to underestimate and minimize it. Nobody knows dick about what this means to humans of what it should and should not.

Bitcoin plays to a quirk of human nature which is called 'Theory of Mind' - we can surmise what another might believe, whether it is true or false, and act accordingly.

It's also consistent with Interface Theory of Perception (ITP). For example, a cup is just a lump of matter, until we perceive it as a cup and know what to do with it. Bitcoin is no different than that cup which we believe can hold water.

Yeah, people legit worship it on there.

Yep, and that’s ok.

I did find it weird though, being brought up in the Abrahamic monotheistic tradition, being asked the question, ‘Who’s your favourite god?’ and then learning there are 34 million gods to choose from.

I know, right! I'm a polytheist myself. And I get the kick put of watching supposedly monotheist hardcore Christians on here low-key worship an egregore of a human-made digital tech. Nothing wrong with it, just interesting is all. Of course they'll never admit it..
