It's frustrating to see obviously authentic new users getting no followers or engagement, while established, influential accounts give credence to scammy shit like this. It's not hard to look at an account before you follow it SMH.
This. Must be so demoralizing for newbies.
naming names! i love it! XD
In their defense, maybe they followed after some interactions and not after the cringe 4 cringe. But totally agree with you. Scrolled the profile, saw that and never followed ๐ฎโ๐จ
It just amazed me how many there were following it. If it's this easy to get traction with zap4follow and some LLM text #darknostr will be true before too long.
Maybe WoT is not the final solution
It should be based on a trusted npubs list, not follows.
It probably still ends up with the same issue, but maybe it makes it less likely? Make more friction to become a trusted npubs. A follow is a single click, and means nothing. Theoretically marking someone as trusted wouldn't be done for someone you just encountered. My trusted list would be reserved for people I know IRL and for people I've had longer interaction with.
Hopefully npubs (that shouldnโt be trusted) donโt find a way to trick and become trusted
have you both seen an instance here where a person gains _trust_ & then flips to the dark side of spam, porn or even the worst kind?
Yes. Happened a few times
uuuffff! i saw a sign of hashtag abuse yesterday. all sorts of vanilla hashtags but advertising sicko content.
Hashtag spam happens often. If you are using Amethyst there is an option to report content, which can help other users avoid those posts.

Exactly what I had in mind ๐
That mf was committed to their scam ๐คฃ
Put in months of work. Crazy ๐คฃ
That one was crazy ๐ฏ
Got totally wrecked by the community too. It was so funny.
That would at least require a longer time commitment, making it more difficult. Not perfect, but better.

That's more or less why I followed him.
What about that Flash guy? What are people's thoughts of him?
The news npub? Not sure. Does it do zaps 4 follows?
I donโt see any when I scroll rapidly
I don't think so. It occurs to me that I am not always aware of the spammy/scammy accounts. Maybe I'm not here enough or maybe I'm just oblivious but I figure I should do my due diligence.
You're looking at theforest, probably. Nothing spammy on there.
He's running a news curation business.
Not everything automated is spammy or scammy. Intent, transparency and delivery are important.
Anyone can add a "bot:true" tag to their profile, as well. I also build bots, for release notes and testing and stuff, but they're going to be labeled and our clients will display that label in the npub profiles.
Labels for bots is a great idea.
sry nostr:npub1m64hnkh6rs47fd9x6wk2zdtmdj4qkazt734d22d94ery9zzhne5qw9uaks but i don't like lists or labels that cause div. confusion & or harm{Pen is a good dude imho} but wdik/idk but i don't really matter 4 the future is on *U* youngrz but C probz w/sum bro. th@z y i engage/discuss & i hope *U* r cool with th@/
This is to avoid confusion. It's not a label applied to others. The creator of a bot can label it as such themselves for clarity, so people know what they are interacting with.
there will *B* botz +/- but who makes those lists/labels*/*ya
It's part of the kind 0 profile, so the npub has to give it to themself.

You are misunderstanding Rand. This comment is about people being able to self label the bots they create. Not about labeling others.
I created this original thread to warn people of possible scammy behavior. I feel it was justified, and the user it was about has already committed to changing that behavior, and we have had real conversations. I think it's a win overall ๐ค
i followED your line bro & waz fine until i saw sum on your list but i get IT & don't doubt your good intention/i don't hav a prob w/bots but most don't have my focus or time/i t *Y* 4 yourz/*****
It wasn't a list of people who I thought were bots Rand ๐ it was a list of people I follow who I was worried had been taken advantage of by a scammer, and I was letting them know, for their own good. I think you misunderstand the intentions of my note.
I felt boniz23 was using strange tactics, and made this note to warn others. I wasn't saying everyone in the list was a bot ๐ In the time since boniz23 has agreed to stop said tactics, so I consider it a closed thread. All is well Rand, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good to know!
