Yeah, using Primal more lately and the trending list is depressing and hard to maneuver away from.

Why? What's it like?

Lots of open-ended questions with reply guys.

Gigantic npubs barking or posting boring pics with reply guys.

Women nobody reads for the articles, with reply guys.

Engagement farming with reply guys.

Anything that doesn't have at least two levels of replies can go, IMO. Trendlist spam.

Sounds like the social media grind is even worse here now that real money, and not karma, is the reward.

I think Twitter et al trained people to scroll, hit the like, and move on. Now they just hit the zap.

We don't have to leave it like that, tho. It's a design decision. We can create high-signal clients.

The engineer in you is showing 🤣

It's the entire attention economy, not social media design. Celebrities exist everywhere, most want to be one, and they all want to convince us to give our time to them instead.

Social media still needs to compete with Games, Hollywood, Family and Friends, and design doesn't change this. Social media just isn't as attractive as the other options.

Maybe, but I'm working on the design and trying to think of how to build something less toxic and tawdry. A high-signal client.

It's a niche market, but it's my market.

I complain about stuff on here, sometimes, and people rush to tell me to "respect the devs" and it's like... I am a dev, you midwit.

I'm trying to brainstorm a solution because I think best aloud. It sort of unfolds and expands, as I go along.

But they can't fathom that someone can name a problem and then simply think up a possible solution.

- I'd give them the benefit of an MVP.

You can iterate on algorithms pretty quickly and easily. The tricky part is to define what you want (and don't want) to achieve, and how to measure whether your changes are achieving exactly that.

I would expect progression like this:

1.0:

- More complex algorithm, driving more diverse engagement

- You can try to optimize for more nuanced engagement factors, and their combinations. (length of the comments; authors re-engagement in the threads; ...)

- Potentially you can pair it up with some Sectional breakdown of the "Trending" ("Pictures"; "Discussion-stirring topics"; "Memes of the day"; "GM notes"; "Most Zapped"; "Farmstr community")

2.0:

- You seperate the client from the trending algorithm control

- Enable each user to configure what sections (tabs) with what algorithms they want to see there (nudge in some defaults, but allow user-controlled overwrites)

- The "MySpace experience"

Yes, I was thinking of having the trending algos be configurable subscriptions.

Most Search Engines (Hotels, Jobs, Wikipedia, ...) have gone through the progression of being Feed-first to being Suggestion-first (section-first) for the returning users.

- It's hard to hit every users needs with a single feed front and centered

- It's easier to offer a personalized menu of suggestions on the home page, and allow the user to *browse* through the catalog, not to just *read or keyword search*

Booking . com is a classic example

- imagine each of these sections being automatically redined (personalized) to your past nostr engagements, while allowing you to make 100% overwrites and fine tune each section with your preferred parameters.

Yes, something like that. 🤔

“Suggestion first” is a kind way of saying “pay to be first”

Yes, but Primal manages that with a feed.
