Why don't we have "stories" on Nostr?
Discussion
Please god no.
Actually want to hear some serious feedback on this ... pros and cons!
It's just a note with a URL to a video, right? But I guess it could be made as its own separate kind.
Whole benefit of a story is its a temporary thing that disappears after 24hrs. Would it be possible to have a note event that all relays agree to delete in 24hrs?
Not really. You can try it, but you do not have any enforcement mechanism. It would have to rely on trust with its key feature. That's a big no no in my eyes.
Have it be a link to a video, the server serving the video can delete it and then the link won't work and the note expires so people don't see notes with dead links.
If you have an wnforcement mechanism to delete the video, sure, why not. I'd say however. that that is a solution in search of a problem.
Not really. Permanent stories are fine.
It wouldn’t necessarily have to be the relays that respect it. You could have a NIP that provides an “expiration date” and clients that support that NIP would know when to stop showing that story.
Expiration date of events is already defined in NIP-40:
https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/40.md
No need to define it, just to code clients and relays supporting it.
Nos.social supports disappearing notes. You can even choose between 15 min, 1 hour, 1 day and 7 days in which the note will disappear.

Does it delete after some hours?
As long as it's not the IG model of "stories" which is about pushing content down your throat as fast as possible... it could be very powerful for those who produce value from videos as opposed to text or graphics.
NIP-51s of NIP-01s?
Amethyst has had them for months.
Stories is just an other feed that is autoscroll and that limit the video length and that anto scroll picture. It has the auto delete property as well. I don’t see any value in this. It hack the dopamine system of users. It’s against their own interest and do not provide any value for them in exchange… kind of the same deal that you have with a heroine. Sure it would make NOSTR more addictive. But I personally rather chose a client that show this as a normal post.
Stories is a shitcoin
Because those are terrible and because there is no way to ensure that all relays will respect the 24h rule thus making them unreliable.
Please keep this abomination away from Nostr.
There is no way to make sure all clients will do that either.
Sure, like there's no way to make sure all clients or relays will respect your mute list or relay settings - you naturally gravitate towards those which do.
nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 isn't this just an extension of NIP-51?
Could be.
That's a little different. No harm is done, if a relay and/or client doesn't respect your mute list. You can just stop using it and go on with your life.
However if you rely on a note being deleted and it isn't, it can potentially cause tremendous damage. In most cases it won't cause any damage or if any, only minor, but making an integral feature that promises [thing], which cannot be reliably satisfied in a trustless manner is potentially dangerous.
That applies to the current state of deleting notes as well, or anything for that matter. Anything you post on Nostr is essentially public and permanent. We can't enforce relay behaviour, only exclude them, and even that is no guarantee that notes won't eventually be broadcast to bad actors. Currently.
Relays are untrustworthy by default, post accordingly, until we have mechanisms that make it impossible for bad actor relays to continue participating, like Bitcoin nodes.
Yes, that is correct, however notes are not advertised as deletable. Some may expect they would be, but it's not their key feature. With stories it is their key feature.
Being pedantic, that a story is only something that must somehow self-destruct from all relays after 24 hours, then nostr is not the place for it, unless you write to a private relay you control and delete it yourself, and even then, I imagine it can be broadcast to other relays once seen.
I'm suggesting a different approach, that stories are a set of notes that you are pinning to your profile with a replaceable event, like a mute or relay list. Not the same, but similar.
A pinned note, sure, why not, but that's not a Story. I have nothing against pinned notes.
Japanese people like stories. Perhaps.
Stories are shit.
nostr:npub1uaajg6r8hfgh9c3vpzm2m5w8mcgynh5e0tf0um4q5dfpx8u6p6dqmj87z6 designed them for Nos and I almost had them implemented at the #nostrica hackathon, but then we got distracted. Here’s a clickable prototype: https://www.figma.com/proto/s0qf4VmyQygydP8MIQazZc/Nos?page-id=703%3A8554&node-id=703-8698&scaling=scale-down&starting-point-node-id=703%3A8555&t=u03DcmNPNW8auYHz-1
yes please. I archive mine on insta so permanent ones are not a problem for me.
i’d like this. i don’t post on instagram that much, but if i do it’s usually a story.
they’re actually popular, but has to be implemented right (fleets).
I’VE BEEN SAYING THIS since the beginning
