This seems like a good opportunity to do an #introductions since I never did a proper nostr introduction so here I am. I’m Carson and I joined nostr about 2 years ago when I saw Jack Dorsey tweet his npub. As I learned about nostr, I got excited because it actually fixes the issue of censorship, and serves as a protocol engineered for free speech. I'd been mostly off social media for a few years (more because It's easy to waste time on and I’m worried about how it’ll affect my brain down the line). Nostr introduced me to bitcoin, and though I haven’t read as deep as I’d like into it yet, it seems to be pretty cool.

I am in my senior year of college. I will be graduating with a BS in Materials Science and Engineering in a few short months. I chose this path because of the interest in nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, more specifically) I developed in high school. While in school, I got a job working in a nanomaterials research lab, where I became associate manager (until I quit today!).

Through working in research for nearly four years and reading research for five years, I have come to think research and research publishing could benefit from change. It is in my goals this year to learn to code and build what I see as the solution to the issues with research, and share that here with y’all.

One of my main goals at the moment is to find a job for when I graduate. I’m really interested in moving to the Austin or Houston areas. However, I recognize that I am at the mercy of life and the opportunities I encounter. I am entrepreneurial, fast learning, and motivated to work hard, given the right environment.

I love talking to and learning from people, biking, reading, wristwatches, cars and motorcycles (and fixing them). There’s lots more to me that I’ll try to share over time.

I haven't engaged a ton with the community on here, but I've followed some of y’all for a long time, and am happy to be a witness to the awesomeness here. Here’s to getting to know you all better and getting more involved this year! nostr:note19nfem7rpkcgc0427t87lg3qej7nffpu96tnhaqm9nkygmq6qyxfqpde9ez

Great to meet you Carson. I look forward to interacting with you here

Great to meet you Carson!

Wishing you the best if luck with your job search and enjoy spring semester of your senior year. It goes quick.

awesome, welcome man!

in what ways do you see an opportunity to improve research and research publishing that learning to code will benefit.

look forward to following your progress here.

for context i am a biomedical engineering dropout, running a cell reprogramming startup in stl

Research goes through centralized publishing houses that are slow and biased. Once it is published is expensive to access, limiting science to elites. I have more written about this issue and what I see as the solution that I will share in the future.

I’d love to learn more about your startup and work! I’ve done some work in the biomedical field but I don’t know anything about cell reprogramming. Based off the quick search I did it seems cool!

making stem cells from differentiated cells!

the state of the art to most is high throughput screening. Our approach is to identify signals cells use to coordinate towards the shared goal of ā€˜be cell type x now’ so that we might achieve a more effective outcome.

typically reprogramming is <1% effective.

Improving this yield is a key bottleneck to translating this technology for regenerative medicine applications and aging

I’m interested in your startup too! Cell reprogramming for research? Longevity? Healing? Glad to see more STL activity on Nostr! I’m over on the IL side.

nice! if ever in stl city area, drop by the lab! In cortex

I will have to do that! In stl city a couple times a week. Took a look at your abstracts on your site. Intriguing stuff. You clearly aren’t a believer in ā€œsettled scienceā€ [cringe]. Love it

I’m in clinical medicine and am perpetually disappointed by the way my colleagues have surrendered to ā€œexpertsā€ on every aspect of their lives. It would be refreshing to see some new thought. I still get looked at like I’m nuts for being pro-Bitcoin…you should see how they look when I speak to rejecting their medical sacred cows.

Love to see this! Experts are not the be all end all

now this is an #introduction!

anyone got a job for a college graduate in materials engineering and/or carbon nanotubes?

fun fact, I once pursued a degree in materials engineering because of nano material research at the time. Unfortunately, after failing requisite calculus classes multiple times, I decided that I was not meant to be an engineer like my father.

I ended up getting a degree in business instead and later another degree in fashion design. Let me tell you, life takes you in wild directions. I write to you now as my third baby lays up on my chest because if he doesn't he will throw up all his milk.
