a life long avowed agnostic, i recently came to the realization that i do believe in good and evil, which unfortunately i think does mean that i definitely believe in god

confirmed not a nihilist

*fortunately

“god is good” proving to be another of those 80IQ truths ffs

💯

god believes in you.

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

Shakespeare. Hamlet. Act II, Scene 2

that’s provably wrong lmao 😂

You said yourself that you “believe” in good and evil, right? Your beliefs are just thoughts, Lisa. Nothing more than that.

People believe lots of things.

Be careful not to mistake the popularity of a belief for the probability of it being true.

nihilism has no place here 🤷

That's not nihilism. It's a fact.

Agnostics sure are fun aren't they? I'm glad you've been able to take a step towards finding truth.

🙄

What you call truth, I call delusion.

Yours is a profitable one, for those who are selling it… but it’s only the gullible who are willing to buy.

🙏🏻

I'm not following, why would the belief in good and evil require you to believe in God? Couldn't your subjective take on good and evil differ from what any "God" promotes?

I think I'm just making myself more confused 🤣

eh it’s hard to explain, but i believe in good and evil hence i now understand the function of god, as archetype 😂

Interesting. I used to conflate god with religious dogma, and I didn't have great associations with dogma.

Pretty soon you'll be attending Latin Mass. This is the way, lol.

why does a belief in good and evil require a belief in magic man in the sky?

That's a wild leap to make.

It is the absence of God which makes me reckon with good and evil.

God is like a mathematical limit.

you can never touch it, but it affects everything in your world

Not necessarily. It's possible conceive of good and evil without believing that some supernatural being created the universe. These are two different concepts.

The "Non agression principle" is what define good and evil

Libertarians believe in good and evil too.

No god involved though just basic moral principles for a peaceful society.

You hit on a logical truth. It makes sense. This thought experiment helped me, so take it for what it’s worth. Every system needs an objective standard that exists outside that system against which to measure things. The thermometer or the ruler exist outside the experiment, they have to in order to measure anything. We cannot say anything is good or evil without an objective standard that exists outside of ourselves, exists beyond humanity. You cannot make a value judgement on things that are better or worse, “gooder or eviler.” Otherwise, logically, you are only making a subjective measurement that is just as valid as the one calling the evil thing “good.” Without God defining good or evil, we become the arbiter of good and evil and thus try to make ourselves God. God must be outside of Creation, not a part of all that is, in order to be objective and not defined by the Creation itself. In order for you to call a truly evil thing, evil, which we know exists, there must be an objective good against which to define that evil thing.

In God

I think this very much depends on how you define God. Are you going with the loose definition of some higher intelligence/source of energy that has some intention? Or are you thinking about a specific God from a specific human religion?
