I like the idea, and in general think it should be an option. The only circumstance where I think I would feel “cheated” as the zapper would be if I was zapping for the purpose of zapvertising, because in that case I am zapping with the expectation that others will be able to see that zap on that post. I believe clients would need to indicate somehow that the recipient only receives private zaps. Perhaps the the zap icon on their notes could have a different look than normal zap buttons.

We talk about this a long time ago. I still think people might see an increase in their zaps if they weren't shown to everyone.

I’m certain of it. Anecdotally I’ve experienced that myself. And I have been outright told by a few people that they sometimes choose not to zap a post they liked if they see it already has been zapped a lot by others, because they feel it has already been zapped “enough.”
Yep. I get that. Pretty sure I was one of those people . The perception of value isn't built off of just what is gained/spent but also what each has in possession at the time.
To help solve the "making reception status known" issue, I think that could be reflected in the name of the wallet when displayed on profile. Dawn @ shadowwallet .cash or whatever clever name conveys that the wallet is a privacy respecting one.
