UBI is no different than allowing people to go bankrupt from student loans
Catastrophic
It works on a small scale, as shown in the Canadian experiments. (mincome)
But who knows on the large scale?
I think it would be better and cheaper than the diaspora of welfare the US has today.
Ideally in the form of notes that can only purchase specific goods.
That all said, I'd prefer there be less state control than more..,
Another user shared an article that he wrote about it, quite elaborate, on a small scale I think it must work because someone else is assuming the expenses, not because it is executive (without knowing in depth the issue of Canada)
Basic income would have to apply only to people earning below a certain threshold, much like various welfare programs work today.
I imagine without that restriction, inflation would go wild. But it's hard to say.
The Canadian mincome experiment found that it drove people away from poverty, towards healthy relationships, and toward education. But the experiment was restricted to a specific area. A single town iirc.
We have found value in giving money to people stuck in negative poverty cycles, and we need to study that more.
However, for an entire nation earning a basic income, even if abolishing other welfare sources such as food stamps and minimum wage?
There's no way to test that without going all in.
