we have a lot of user experience & onboarding improvements to make. I'm still very bullish, early Bitcoin wallets were far more daunting, with a far smaller network of people who could help you along.

As a newcomer myself, I'm asking myself two questions:
1. is it vulnerable to DDos? Anyone could simply create a gigantic amount of pub keys that would post gigantic number of comments, masking any "genuine" message in a flood of bot-generated noise
2. is there any kind of gossip in place between relays? Or do you just have to hope that relevant content will be posted to the relays you are subscribed to
Paid relays are a way to overcome the DDoS attack.
You'd pay on writing, not reading, right?
Yup. Most (if not all) paied relays are free to read.
