Paid relays might not be the right move.

It makes sense for established users but does not help the newcomers.

Current Nostr experience = sign up using things you don’t understand and connect to things that make no sense, only to see a bunch of Chinese spam.

We may need to somehow extract topics from notes and start recommending those, or find a way to deal with global spam without the easy button.

Also, Gm! ☀️ 🤙 ☕️

I’ve been thinking this as well, creates a paywall that discourages new users.

💯

I’ve had to tell people to hold off on joining just so they don’t get immediately turned off. 2 of my friends already complained all they see is Chinese so they stopped using it 😅

Same. My tech friends also complain clients are too slow and too buggy.

My screen giggles around all the time, like earthquake hitting it. So gotta close app & restart often

*jiggle haha

Yaaa the global horrors

GM 🌞💜

This has a lot of sense..

I have mostly free relays and a visit to the universe is always entertaining 😂

Definitely need a better way to get through the door

LOL. I suggest you then Nostrgram.co and its Following+ list. There is a mix of your follows and their ones too. Very enjoyable 🍀🫂

Thank you! I’ll check it out

Iris.to has already fixed the spam. More clients just need to do the global feed on trust webs.

How does that fix the feed for a newcomer?

All you have to do is find a couple good people, which shouldn’t be hard. Most people who come over will be doing so because someone invited them. As long as you have that Iris’s model eliminates spam perfectly.

Seems like a step in the right direction. Not perfect but better than spam 🙌

Also good night 😴🌙💤

Good morning

Good morning.

I joined today using Amethyst and I see zero Chinese.

Did you follow anyone in onboarding?

I was lured with free sats by #[5] . That's it.

iris.to is a client that only shows notes your network has interacted with. So once you follow a few people it starts to display content with barely any spam. In the about page of the client, there are links to beta versions of iOS and Android apps.

I like this model. It’s not perfect but close.

This is a great suggestion!

Ive been on amethyst and snort for about a week or two and haven't paid for any relays yet haven't seen any spam.

Must be that choice of relays. Whatever they are doing is working. This needs to be across the board.

#[5] pushed out an anti-spam update a couple days ago so maybe that's it?

Release v0.17.4: 5 Strike anti-spam

Anti-spam filter requires 5 duplicated msgs to temporarily block

Hahah so true

What if clients generated a note kind announcing new pubkey, and made lists of new pubkeys, snort would show me a list of new pubkeys on snort so I could provide support directly about the client the newb is using. Then add filters about the new accounts rather than new notes, language, number of notes, nip5, ln addy, ect.

While I mostly agree with you I think right now the best onboarding is inviting friends and then tell them to check out the content of their frens and the frens of their frens etc etc. It's very organic as well but yes, we all should learn Chinese anyway.

Friend-of-friend feeds plus sending people to nostr via nprofile links seems like it would help a lot with bootstrapping. Spam is only really a problem for people starting cold.

"who to follow" would be a good idea

Some clients already do this

You want it to be like Twitter where you have to worship Celebs basically?

Huh? How did you get that out of my note…

Just another racist troll lol

Basically wanting algorithisms to promote posts

Topics you mean? Yeah it’s not perfect but we already do this with #hashtags so it’s not really any different. Just saves you the step of having to tag notes. It would not sort by likes or zaps. Just show a feed of everything in that topic, no sorting.

I think the logical solution is to put the accounts on the classification of game news Video Maker Designer Developer Thus, it will be easy for any comer to choose what he wants to watch and follow more than nominating some accounts that are not of interest to the user

🤔

🤙🙏

Yeah it might be an idea to transform it to most used hashtags per relay, by verified users + some other qualifications to clear out possible hashtag spam. Make it a bit easier to have touchpoints to current topics

this made sense even though it is now evening
