The sheer amount of control it gives the issuer is just insane! I wouldn't feel comfortable having any real amount of my money in an account that can be switched off at someone else's whim. Or money that can expire, or only be spent in approved places. It's just creepy!

Understandable. However, these features are not inherent to all cryptocurrencies - some offer greater privacy and control over your funds than others. Have you considered alternative coins?
We are talking about central bank distributed currencies here, not altcoins/crypto right?
Im Bitcoin only I'm afraid (with a small nod to privacy coins), nothing that can be done on other chains that can't be done on bitcoin, if needed.
Either way, programmable money issued by central banks can get in the sea as far as I'm concerned.
