I don't know either but I've found it to be very calming / relaxing if nothing else. I don't do anything special, water comes out of the well at about 53F and that's good enough for me.

The dopamine release afterwards alone is enough to prove it works. Nothing like it especially when paired with sauna

I don't have access to a sauna, but I recently started doing [3 mins hot shower + 3 mins plunge] x 3 and I'm hooked. Great way to de-stress.
