Absolutely. Especially on government waters.

Would love to do it on government servers 🤣

I have a trailer full of retired government servers, does that count? XD

I don't know I just wanna watch The Mandalorian for free

Why not pay for it?

I refuse to feed the evil mouse

That's protest then.

No, for a real protest, ego must be left aside.

Why?

So that the suspicion of self-interest does not arise at all.

Why can't protest be in your self inteterest?

Because than it's something else.

No. I don't consider it protest as it is a different mechanism than gathering to vent frustration at something.

Piracy involves theft of property. Not the same.

How is it property if I can right click and copy it?

Nvm.

Also another rhetorical question, I don't wish to argue on this one, but how is it even theft if you still have your copy.

It can be. I used to be a leecher and wouldnt have considered that to be a protest, more of a bystander finding a favorable solution. Ive since improved my VPN and file management setup and now I seed all torrents indefinitely. I also share my library with any friends and family who ask.

The message I'm trying to send is "Fuck you media giants with all of the added burdens of trying to legally stream things. Prices keep going up, VPNs are blocked and content is randomly removed. And fuck the password sharing crackdowns. I will just share the media directly with those who want to own it (via torrents) or stream it (via Plex or Jellyfin)"

The only problem imo is when it actively reduces sales.

But if people that wouldn’t have bought it anyway pirate it: who cares? you get free publicity at least

My problem is I can't even buy it anymore, even if I do, there are bunch of "legalities" about the things I can do with the content I bought. Let alone, there's hardly CD/DVD drives left to play content. Why can't I get the files legally on my pen drive? Or hard disk?

It's very very stupid.

Only option for most people is to buy subscription services and hope to god they have the content they wish to consume. Otherwise they only consume what is being shoved down their throats.

I refuse to comply to this stupidity.

Again, falls under the last one: you wouldn’t have earned from it anyway, so why care about piracy (as a publisher)?

Piracy is often either a pricing or product issue. They can’t afford it so they won’t buy it anyway, or you are offering the product in a way that they don’t want

Yea, i don't like that my piracy might be sending the message that "no one wants to pay for this content". My problem is that the content is locked to platforms and access is fully permissioned.

It’s kind of their right to do whatever. Though it is a shitty move.

Piracy is fine as long as it doesn’t actively try to make less people pay for that content: people pirating due to a subscription model would have never paid anyone

No. But I don't condemn it.

Let's say I have certain values. Then I should be able to pay for art after I consumed it having judged it valuable.

If movies and music is art you should be able to hear and see it before you pay for it. Thats why people bought records.

They heard a song on the radio and liked it. Decided to purchase it.

I don't even watch movies anymore.

I almost always turn it off.

Example:

Why would I pay for a movie if 10 minutes in they blaspheme out of context and its not even in the script sometimes. Or there is some woke ass nonsense being shoved down my throat.

When entertainment is used to try and push some type of message that falls outside the scope my value system I have been conned if I paid.

Unfortunately there is not a mechanism where you can show appreciation to a artist after you have consumed the art. Oh wait.

#nostr fixes this

In fact it lets you pay people for checking out your work !

It's more like Nostr/lightning allows for micro payments where no middleman is bumping up the "full price". There's still plenty of preview options.

I'll watch Gene Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Peter O Toole movies. What more does a guy need.
