I’ve just had an interesting conversation with nostr:npub14yf4yasnqgpkzjrzhysshglf82e8nkp8r9sn5hzqu4n244k3avtshhwpyu saying everybody is welcome on #nostr and we don’t treat influencers or celebrities any different.

But a question.

Is everybody welcome here?

It is an open protocol, so everybody is free to engage, but do we want to replicate the toxicity of X or the vacuousness of Instagram?

Is this is different place not intended for everybody or is a new self sovereign content protocol that is intended for all?

Opinions please….

With our own curated lists, our algorithms, no central pumping nor shadow banning... We have a much better chance

Different communication methods attract different usecases. We cant stop those who we deem bad, but they cannot stop us from critisizing it.

Autonomous content protocol intended for everyone of course. However, it's not comparable to big tech's social media in the sense that mean behavior isn't encouraged by likes here.

Currently, I think, nostr is to complicated for those toxic X members. And because of the relay mechanics, the keys, and the missing Algo for addiction, I think they won't join.

But nothing stops Elon from driving a monster relay for all X members 😀

To be honest, I don’t think I personally want “everyone” on here 🫣 I left social media for other reasons, but when I was on all others I hated the BS ads for a “healthy” protein bar and I hated not understanding if this hair product really worked or if this is a paid add that gave her a script to say it really does x, y, and z for your hair. I really ended up never trusting the paid ads 🤷‍♀️

But, I think the zaps here on nostr will help us naturally #OrangePill the masses and that I do want. 🙏

Maybe when the #IGnostr is built out with zaps, others can go there or wherever they want. But for now, I’m bringing my friends here to help me orange pill them even more. It’s just that I’m a girl, so I mostly have girlfriends 👯‍♀️ to bring. I know we are not as advanced as you guys, but we want to be a part of this future. I am the “tech” one in our group so they trust me with phone security, bitcoin, wallets (hot and cold), apps whatever, so while at lunch or out for tea we usually talk “tech” and what’s new. I bring up nostr and those that show interest or bring them here.

I’ve never been a fan of the pronoun debate, but when you say something like “we are not as advanced as you guys” I do understand the argument and advocate its limited adoption.

Just as your influencer friend has no special privileges, so you are no less “advanced” as us “guys”.

We are all beginners, we are all learning, we are all equal.

Influencers will be treated the same. That's related to our psychology. They're gonna influence here too and we'll be influenced, we already are.

Toxicity is fed by the platform with corporate algorithms so that's fixable.

And yes. Everyone is welcomed.

If I don't want everyone i just curate my feed...

Yes 100%

Open to all.

It is for everybody. If the incentives are different, people will behave differently. With a portable network, where choice is paramount, there will not be anyone dictating how one "should" behave.

The Nostr protocol does not discriminate who can have a private key and sign events with them. So anyone is welcome to use the protocol. Communities of people, however, throughout all of history (whether on- or off-line) tend to distinguish between desirable and undesirable behaviors, and people who display desirable behaviors are welcomed into a community, and people who display undesirable behaviors are not welcomed or they are challenged to change. Maybe the expectations are unrealistic or perfectly reasonable, but it’s just how communities of people operate. There is no technical limit to what types of communities can grow on Nostr. But within each community certain behaviors will be accepted and others will not. Multiple communities may share values in common, and others may deviate from each other. There is no singular “Nostr” but rather people who use it, like the internet, like bitcoin. I only need to welcome into my timeline the people and behaviors I find appealing/acceptable. But if I shun other types of behavior and the people who exhibit them, I am not excluding them from Nostr.

Excellent argument, we’ll articulated and thought out.

Agreed and Thank you

Nostr, just like Bitcoin, doesn't care ab opinion

open protocol FTW 😂

I believe the killer feature which solves your dillemma is that the major difference between nostr and all other social media apps out there is that nostr is NOT an app or platform, but an entire protocol. This is an important distinction as it allows both scenarios you posit, to exist. You can have everybody and a select few at the same time.

An app or platform sits on top of a protocol. Most existing social media is one app sitting on one protocol controlled by one entity.

Nostr itself is an open protocol which can have many apps/platforms/clients/etc sitting on top of it. Some of those apps can be wide open to anyone to post anything like damus or amythest. But people can also develop walled garden type apps, such as ZBD, on top of nostr.

Imagine a very specific client/app, let's call it OnlyMugs. Within the app, it only shows pics of coffee mugs. The app can sit on nostr and run its own relay that aggregates from other major relays but filters for only coffee mug pics. The rest of the world is free to continue posting whatever they want and it'll continue to be discoverable on damus, amythest, snort, iris, primal, etc etc. But if you're on OnlyMugs, you only see mugs.

Best of both worlds can happen with nostr protocol.

Very good point and very much agree.

Nostr is for enemies just like Bitcoin. It is essential. However, there is a reason for the mute button, use it regularly. Use it for those who are here to waste your time and energy. Do not use it for those who disagree respectfully with you. Echo chambers will make you stupid just as fast as buying into the mainstream narrative.

I don't think it matters what you or me want, it is a decentralized protocol you can't stop anyone form posting/reading/commenting unless you make a private relay (so you have options).

There might be whole communities using Nostr you won't even know about because you don't connect to their relays

This is the beauty of Nostr.
