I’m curious about the cold water immersion technique that is used for physical and mental health. In particular I see all these videos of people getting in lakes with ice on the surface or in bathtubs full of ice and liquid water. Nearly freezing water, so around 1c to 2c. That’s really cold. I have gone swimming in water that cold, I’m not a fan.

So how long should we be in cold water and how cold should it be? Turns out it’s longer and warmer than i thought.

According to this research review the water should be 10c to 15c and immersion should last 11 to 15 minutes.

Even wirh that knowledge it doesn’t make me want to go swimming right now.

Here in the Netherlands we have a cold water celebrity. Dives and rests in ice cold water, there’s a whole cult around him.

He happens to have an identical twin brother. (from same egg).

That brother lives an average life with just warm showers. Both are examined and the doctors could not discern a single shroud of difference between the healths of both brothers …

Did the doctors test their mental health, personality traits too? I think it's mostly hormones and neurotransmitters.

I had no clue Wim had an identical brother. Quite interesting they have tested them.

this huberman podcast had a lot of interesting information about cold immersion https://fountain.fm/episode/X82LPl6tM5Tf87zyiNlE.

i started using this cold pod in my backyard as the weather started cooling in the fall and slowly built up my tolerance for water <15c (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BTSRJ4MY/)

Before getting in cold water, a person must have a very hot shower, stay in sauna or exercise for a while. It helps thickening the skin and improves the overall immune response for the cold. Now in Spain the water is really cold that I would only put my feet; mainly because it’s not sunny enough to get dry afterwards. Swimming or staying by the sea is relaxing anyways.

It’s great :)

Getting in as cold shower as possible and counting to 60 has a really interesting effect. Try breathing slowly and not shaking/moving. By 45 you get used to it and then for another hour or two, your body radiates heat and you feel happier.

The trick is you can start with warm shower and just turn cold in the end.

I recommend trying this at least once. It takes 60 seconds of your life...
