Worked from Phoenix!

Love to see it! 👏

Nice

Here’s how much Alex and his colleagues make courtesy of nostr:npub1ghcetnluhryhynhuyj8s2pazldjm27wl40nu6dfeskvpv09twcnsneygat : nostr:note1yp68flfjtznt6pzs7z32g20ewl057szvm59dvfgzds7gxaenxy6qg99lhk

Is that supposed to be fucked up? It’s a lot more than i make but those are all C-levels. Many places they’d be paid more, i think

I’m not sure. Just offering transparency for people to consider while tipping.

I think it is a lot for a nonprofit charity. I’d expect this kind of salary for someone working at a large business. If people knew the president made over $300k, would they donate less?

I don’t donate shit to anyone besides zapping plebs and devs so idk. I feel like if we were to look into the same positions at other global nonprofits, this wouldn’t look all that high in comparison. But i have no idea

Open sats made nothing and the two CEOs for the bitcoin policy institute made $18k each. Not saying they shouldn’t make any money but I think nonprofits can be more transparent about how much of your donation actually goes to the cause you’re trying to support.

There is a key difference here though, those are Bitcoin institutions supporting almost exclusively FOSS development afaik, whereas HRF has a much broader scope. Alex is a bitcoiner so i think that could distract us from what the HRF is/does a bit

I do get what you’re saying and yeah it’s somewhat cushy, but i don’t feel triggered by it personally. No shade towards anyone at all here from my end btw

I understand but it is still a job for them.

And I want people to be aware of these salaries. It might rub them the wrong way to think that the president can earn 1 million dollars in a span of 3 years off donations.

We work extremely hard and produce a lot of change in the world and I am very very proud of all the things we do

If you don’t think the work we do is worth it, then simple, don’t donate

And BTW, just for clarity, any donations earmarked to the Bitcoin Development Fund go directly to developers, nothing is skimmed

Donors give us “general operating” grants when they want to support the truly awesome humans who work for us

Are funds that go to the workers, including yourself, only from the general operating fund?

General operating grants are donations made to us that aren’t earmarked for anything in particular

They support staff salaries and whole range of other things

I can assure you all of my colleagues kick major ass and are the kind of highly productive people one would want to support

Were not just sitting around doing nothing

You didn’t answer my question. Are the general operating grants the only funds that pay worker salaries?

It depends. If someone donates to our Art in Protest program for example it may cover some of the salary of the director of that program. BDF is special and any grants earmarked to that go straight into grants with nothing taken off the top.

Okay so the Bitcoin development fund is the only fund that sends 100% of its contributions to the cause with no skimming off the top?

Are there any accurate numbers you can provide as to how much of other funds are skimmed? Like this art fund, do you know what percentage gets skimmed off the top for salaries?

We have two dozen programs. They are all unique. Some programs are 100% funding a person to do research or legal work. We hire lawyers to get people out of jail for example. Some programs are grants like BDF or specific programs we have to make grants to civil society in Belarus or Hong Kong. Some are event production like the Oslo Freedom Forum. Do you have a specific question? Would you like to make a donation to something?

If I donate $1k to a fund, what percentage of that actually goes to the cause? 95%? 80%? 50%?

We aren’t the Red Cross or something. We don’t exist to give money to other people. We have some special funds that do that like the BDF but we are generally speaking an advocacy organization. If you give money to for example the Freedom Fellowship it gets split across: a) paying the people who make it happen - the main cost b) some travel and accommodations for workshops and retreats c) a stipend we give the fellows d) some equipment and other smaller misc costs

I’ll stick with BDF then. Thanks for your time.

Anytime. Our next grant round will be announced around Sep 1. Shipping another billion sats to amazing projects worldwide ✌️

Hooray! Another successful bitcoiner is making a difference in the world! I am proud to share your work with my peers, Alex.

Well done

I don't know what to think to be honest...

On one hand I found it so fucking ridiculously high (20k a month!!!), especially for a non profit thing, it feels wrong

On the other hand I guess non profit org also need competent people and then have to compete on the market with other businesses for these talents

Can they earn these same salaries working for a business? Is there work really worth that much money? I seriously doubt it.

My guess is they make high salaries because they’re able to get more donors. So the incentive would be to get more donors to earn more money. Not a great an incentive to prevent corruption.

This is very ignorant. We pay people way less than what they would make in the private for-profit sector. This is a constant issue for us, losing people to big companies who pay more

When I started at HRF in 2008 full time I made $30k a year

I have worked up to the executive level after working very very hard for 17 years and again am proud of it

That’s how a lot of nonprofits treat their workers. I’ve worked for some in the past as a volunteer until I found out their CEOs were making nearly $300k a year. So your nonprofit underpays its workers but the top guys are making over $200k. Is that fair?

No. You aren’t understanding what I am saying. We pay everyone fairly and offer them opportunities to make more as they progress in their careers. I have worked extremely hard to get where I am all the way from the bottom and it took nearly 20 years.

Well you’re flip flopping. First you said you pay the workers way less than the private business sector and that it’s such a problem you’re always losing workers. Now you’re saying you pay them fairly and offer them opportunities to grow. Which one is it?

Let me be clear. We pay people fairly and I am evidence that you can grow a lot provided you work hard and are happy and productive for many years. At the same time, all of our salaries are proportionally less than working at a big company like Google or AirBnB or what have you.

Dude, surely you have more important things to do.

Honestly don't know what to think...

But it for sure doesn't make me want to give more money to it...😆

I’m in the wrong business. Gotta get into non profit

Nonprofits are quite profitable

No kidding

I will have to update my screenshot for payto. This address is definitely more sexy :)

failed for me on Phoenix (fetching for payment details fail)

Should be working now, have to keep the android phone running phoenix awake 😅
