I really fucking tried too, even had a girlfriend many years ago that was into it. She gave me this spiel about how some anime is art and I mustn't have seen the good ones yet. Made me sit through a couple of hours of this interminable anime movie.
I fucking hated it but had to pretend I didn't. I should've known then that it was never going to work.

There's your problem, Anime has art, but anything pretentious enough to call itself art is going to be insufferable.
This season there's a show called "My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1" and it's about how this guy who worked himself to death gets transported to another world and then lives an easy life. There's this bunny girl dressed like a playboy bunny who likes the protagonists big carrots. That's Anime right there.
Really only a couple I like. Usually girls like death note.
I like the old 1980's Dragonball. It was just a retelling of A Journey to the west (西游记).
Baki on Netflix is ok. And more masculine than any cartoon that comes out in the west. I prefer anime or K dramas over the absolute faggotry that is Disney entertainment. But I don't really watch much TV either.

I only really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. The Ghibli movies were pretty good too.
Trigun is the GOAT.
Normally an anime that diverges from the manga isn't very good, but the 90s anime is just fine and then Trigun Maximum is something totally different which is great. Looks like the new Trigun anime is decent too, more Trigun Maximum than original Trigun.
That's fine. Not everything is for everyone.
My wife was fangirling over the main actors from Degrassi High yesterday, and all that show ever was to me was the marker where Saturday morning cartoons were so I should go outside.
