Welcome new Nostriches! Why would you want to run your own relay?

You don't have to do it. However, if you do, it puts you in charge of your social data for the very first time! No one can delete your notes or events. You are in change of your own data! Your notes cannot be banned, censored, or deleted. If any of these were to happen on any of the public relays that you use, you simply rebroadcast your notes and events to other relays. It's beautiful.

The easiest method is to use one of the "node" platforms out there from nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct , nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll, or nostr:npub1r29mgme6rnyj5sljdnerfty9ewwnj2nje76d0qqyhvt0wkhncxvsyc23pd . However, if you aren't afraid of the command line and have your own hardware, you can use Nostream by nostr:npub1qqqqqqyz0la2jjl752yv8h7wgs3v098mh9nztd4nr6gynaef6uqqt0n47m . https://github.com/cameri/nostream

You'll want to make sure your relay isn't writeable by the world, but is accessible and writeable by you and maybe your friends and family.

Hello Derek, does Nostr collect IP address and any other device information?

Clients and relays may do this. Most do not, but they can see your IP. You can run your own client on your own desktop or server if you'd like. You can also use a VPN or even TOR to access TOR relays.

I’ve set my own private relay through start9 but i dont think its working. Im also using DAMUS on iOS and amethyst on grapheme but for some reason there are more relays running on DAMUS than amethyst and only 2 followers.

some clients don't use or overwrite the relay list on your profile. i don't know if damus does that or not.

is your relay on your start9 accessible from the outside world? only while you're on your home network? or do you have to use tailscale or a VPN to access it?

No I can’t access my start9 outside of my Wi-Fi at all. I set it up but I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m new to all this stuff.

but off of the top of my head, the easiest one would be to use tailscale. it's a private VPN. install this app on your node and set it up on your phone. then add your relay to your nostr profile. i.e. wss://start9-node-name:1234 and then you'd need to launch your tailscale each time you want to connect to your own relay before you launch your nostr client.

the harder way, the way it do it, so i don't have to launch a VPN each time i connect to my node, requires some knowledge of command line and port forwarding on your router. if you want to go that route i can help later. heading to fireworks now.

I’m using the paid version of proton vpn and I’ve been looking into purchasing a new router to set up DD-WRT. Enjoy the fireworks there’s no rush on my end. I think I bit off more than I can chew. I went from using an iPhone to bitcoin, to nodes, Lightning, servers, Linux and now nostr. All in about a year. My head hurts. Tech support at start9 has been great btw.

If you don’t connect your mobile clients to VPN, do your notes and data all sync to your relay once you reconnect to the home network, on Start9 or myNode?

You can access your start9 remotely (outside your wifi/lan) over tor.

I’ve setup Tor on all my devices and still can’t access my start9 outside of my Wi-Fi. I think this is something to do with my modem.
