I’m not doubting this at all but Niagara Falls US is an absolute dump whereas the CA side is very touristy but definitely more affluent.

Is it really that bad there?

Yep - there’s a low end casino, crime, drugs, etc. The park by the falls is fine but the city is a pretty dangerous place.
