It's not just Americans anymore unfortunately. Fatness follows in every country that started replacing healthy fats with seed oils.
Side fact: The actor who played Newman lost 110 lbs later in his career after this show ended (it hurt his typecasting a lot). He tried everything including surgery, but diet & exercise were what did the trick for him.
He did Jenny Craig, which is, funny enough, low fat, mod carb, mod protein dieting.
