If you were to receive a handmade shepards sling as a gift, what materials would made it feel "wow" to you? I'm hoping some input will help me narrow my ideas.

What is a shepards sling?
David used it on Golith.
Dawn there should be a Yote skin, and 3 shined up rocks
Hmmm... I know a fur guy. I wonder if I can make that happen

Its going to be harder to creep up on the guards but should be good camouflage
in the new DLC for Kingdom Two Crowns it's themed for ancient greece and the archers are replaced with slingers :)
I have no idea what half that sentence means π
I had to google, he can buy skins for a video game that turns archers into slingers
Ah! Cool!
In Masters of Magic, slingers were OP. Halfling Race ftw
yeah, in The Hobbit there is quite a bit of detail about the skill of hobbits at throwing rocks at stuff, i think it features in the LOTR saga as well, in one or two places
Reading The Hobbit as a kid is one of my favorite childhood memories. Not sure what that says about my childhood, but I was completely enthralled by that story.
Ditto, after which i blew through Lord of the Rings in a summer in my teen years. Amazing story it says most about your lust for exploration and good imho
I tried to read that. Got about 20 pages into it and it was still describing hobbiton. Never made it further.
it's not as painful as Lovecraft, yeesh that shit is slow as cold molasses
You mean reading ? I also read some love raft storys and as a fand of subtile horror you know like suspira and such things, i did like reading lovecraft.
Still king is king :-)
tolkein is way way better than lovecraft
i agree, he is detailed, but it's not boring details, and if you find the details that tolkein liked boring YOU are boring
Depends i found tolkien much more detaild if you jnto that stuff, like the silmarilon or lotr but there are often parts that bored me, aragorn sure had his moments :-)
Stop being mean just people have different opinions on books is politness.
Is what YOU tell me ?
Nah
you never read tolkein, not even his most simplified story
for me reading hobbit was a literal day of reading
but on the other hand, i read Mises Human Action twice over a period of about 2 months, that thing is literally as thick as the bible, and i still haven't read the bible, the bible is much harder to read than Mises
lol! for me, anyway
mises was only hard for me with all the latin funny words he used
I tried to read the Bible once. All I remember was pages and pages of βA begat Bβ, βB begat Cβ, βC begat Dβ and so on and so forth.
yeah, i haven't even finished genesis in my attempt of recent, it is very tedious
Bible can be a tough read but itβs worth it.
I had to grow up & wake up A LOT before it really started making sense.
my issue with this reading is that my livelihood depends on me reading these flickering screens, and after i am done with that i don't want to do more reading
been trying to dial back the screen time... got lotta things to sort out, i live in paradise here and i hardly stick my head outside the window
I also very old fashioned in these thinks i mean my long retired dad is using a e-reader, while i love books.just comparing things, you know.
As for holy scriptures they all got something, but as often it is what you think, that forms out your reality.
Someone else into βbooksβ ?
Real page turning books > digital readers IMHO.
But audio works well if too busy.
If you want to try again, try starting in the New Testament and then going back to read the Old Testament. A Bible reading plan or study group can also be helpful.
Thereβs a Nostr Bible study meeting on Cornychat every Tuesday at 8:30 pm EST (literally just wrapped it up tonight), youβre welcome to join if you want!
I was bored by Frank Herberts world building but not his story telling.
the stuff about the bene gesserit was not boring
Way better than house harkonnen , i guess :-)
I meant planetary, geography, environmental, fauna and flora. That type of thing. I prefer world building that is less explanatory and through a discovery process.
To be honest barely even remember those parts. I've read the book twice. There was lots of things in all of the film and tv versions that were not even in the book.
Anyway, the maps and scripts were the things that enchanted me in LotR, my mother read The Hobbit to me and my sister in our childhood. I didn't read the trilogy until 2010. Now that is detailed, I agree. But it was well paced, just dense.
Vernor Vinge and Neal Stephenson do this well. They drop you right into the action and reveal the world as you go.
Yes. Thats the way. My mind can easily adapt to morph the world into perspective as new information becomes available. Have you read my story nostr:nprofile1qqsxzsz83jdwztcapd2qulzhspnyjvn6jxcypvrl0w3aahp40j4smfgpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqzyrhwden5te0dehhxarj9emkjmn976av6t? I have a chapter that really builds world through dialogue.
I didnβt know you wrote something. Link?
The hobbit is Tolkiens best book imo , i also read that with 16 , somewhere in the 90s.I still remember the dwarfs rushing into the house, gave me a few laughts
it's not really just a skin, the Call of Olympus DLC quite radically changed a lot of things, and to be honest, at this point it's still pretty beta compared to the base game.
like, they added this "rally flag" that is cheaper than siccing an army on the frist nest of greed they run into, but you have to hang out with them, they stick with you, but you can also use the "armies" as well at the same time, so actually sometimes it's kinda boring because you can often use the two together once you upgrade your base to flatten every greedy portal until the end of the island, get the temple activated with the statue you get at teh other end of the map and voila... and they also boosted the ability of the monarch mounts to do stuff, like, there is this chimera, part lion, part dragon, it incinerates everything for about halfa screenfull as you jump forward, and they have a Cerberus that summons a free army that is undead ghosts, they aren't very strong though, the Chimera is better
but my point was just that they sorta are diverging from what the main theme of the game was - managing the objectives of NPCs who you command to do stuff to achieve game goals, they made it more of an action game which i think is going in the wrong direction, i played through near to the end of the Olympus game and it's not as fun
anyway, was just a reference to slingers... that was a thing before archery became a thing, simply throwing rocks, and then using leather things to add leverage so you can spin it hard and give it momentum and let go of one side and throw it like you had 3x bigger arms
David & Goliath style rock thrower
Make it a full kit in leather. Space for sling and 5-8 stones. Depending on how stiff the leather is a magnetic closure with a snap backup.
Quality leather.?
Would the straps be leather too, or just the pouch?
I think the pouch. The straps may need to be durable rope like so it won't twist tear and break (like leather might)
really nylon webbing would be better, less elastic = more force
I thought about that originally, but I'm pretty sure it'll be more of a display piece than actually used.
well if it's just a decoration just copy the design of old traditional items
personally i like the sexy tactical nylon thing, and the materials are easier to work with
π― I'm committed to fox pelt now. I'm thinking jute or hemp straps so its not stiff & can be used. That's pretty traditional
yeah, hemp webbing would be pretty nice, has to be thin tho, nearly a ribbon
I'll see how complicated this gets as I'm going, I guess π pick up my fur later today, start tomorrow
i won't be happy unless you learn how to hit a human head sized target panel with it tho
also, my mother tanned a fox one time, it's pretty sturdy leather... maybe half as sturdy as kangaroo
π there are some skillsets one should not advertise
i definitely can't do it well, i have not practiced very much, but it would be a fun sport, plenty of rocks around, easy to make a target, and just to train the hand-eye to do the target in this unaugmented medium would be good preparation before getting a lever to make it really sting
anyway... it gives me some ideas for some sport to do in my current condition that would be actually pleasant... just gotta find a steel disc i can use for the task and set it up somewhere i can safely fling rocks at it for half an hour every other day until i can hit it consistently
would be fun they said
also i am already happy because i can see the future

i made this little row of ammunition after a local stray dog got too close to my residence last week... been meaning to polish up my skills... pitching actual heavy lead weights of similar size at full arm speed actually can be pretty painful to be hit by if they strike right in the face, if not downright straight punch in the face style, sometimes TKO style
if WW3 is upon us then einstein's "sticks and stones" might be essential for the early stages of the dark time
Please share a picture of your target when you get that set up
for sure.. there is abandoned metallic items all over the place i could choose from, i'll do it soon, and make a collection of small rocks to practise with
it could be especially good for those times where i'm so mad at someone saying something super dumb on nostr that i am lost for words
in such times, probably pegging some rocks at a piece of scrap metal with a trollface painted on it could be quite good
