It's not the like counts they like, it's the things they think the like counts say about them.
As a millennial I am very aware of the amount of likes I receive when I make a post. Checking back in, making new updates etc.
Best way to fight this, I've found, is to be engaging in more productive things. Learning, reading, living life, interacting IRL.

People didn't care about that in the beginning. People just wanted to share things with friends or make new ones. Then they wanted the most number of friends, so it became just collecting the most followers.
