My prediction is that this era of free public relays will be short lived lest we fall victim to the tragedy of the commons.

Second prediction is that as nostr grows, there will be clients that are also lightning wallets. This part sucks because they will likely be custodial. If nostr grows beyond bitcoiners, I think someone will see this as an obvious UX improvement to onboard non-bitcoiners who don't want to learn two new things (nostr and bitcoin). I'm not happy about it, but I think this is where things will end up.

I don't think clients will be custodial wallets. Breez wallet created a SDK that allows any app integrate a non custodial wallet.

I wish that were the case but even bitcoiners are running custodial lightning on here.

Yes, because Breez SDK is still in development. Maybe Fedimint will help too. Let's wait to see how things will develop.

Any thoughts on how relay infrastructure is going to develop from here on? I think this part is crucial

That's outside my wheelhouse but I agree. I know people are thinking about this but it doesn't get discussed publicly enough on here.

Im going definitely to work on that. Having a bitcoin mining background, there’s a lot I can add to the discussion. Any suggestions of people a should talk to?

the truth is that evolution is lazy.

things seldom change more than they need to.

I’ve always felt a person’s custody decision should be a product of % of net worth x Risk.

I like having a custodial wallet for small amounts on my phone.

obviously if u have $20 to you name on blue wallet it’s a different story.

Feels like maybe Fediment fixes this with distributed custodians.

wen fediment relays?

You're right about low stakes custodial amounts in practice, but I think it's important that the tradeoffs remain understood and that a culture of self-custody still exists amongst bitcoiners in the era of lightning.

Bitcoin moves fast and lightning moves even faster, so I suspect the culture could shift just as quickly to where there becomes a disconnect between how we talk about on-chain bitcoin and L2. I personally wouldn't want that.

I am in Nostr for the freedom, absolutely not for Bitcoin, although I respect people's choices.

I'm in both for the freedom but I also understand there will be users like yourself who find nostr and don't really care about Bitcoin.

Bitcoin shouldn't be a prerequisite but I'd hope that those who are choosing to use it in conjunction with nostr can have the most minimal of tradeoffs out of the box

Hoping things like greenlight and ldk make it more feasible to do non custodial lightning

🤞
