I don't really get why some people are so opposed to paid relays. Problems with existing paid services are that they basically do full KYC on you, and charge very high monthly fees.

If we can do fast, easy, non-KYC payments of small amounts to get around a spam filter, then I'm all for limiting my interactions to people on the other side of the filter (unless I follow somebody explicitly, of course). You want me to see your posts, pay the $0.25 so I know you're a human being. I don't need to know which human you are, just that you are human.

And if you don't care if I see your posts, then that's fine too 👍 It's all opt-in, just like Bitcoin.

That is Vitalik's "crypto trilemma". The distributed computing trilemma is called CAP. C is roughly equivalent to having a globally up-to-date view (consensus). A is roughly equivalent to scalability. P is roughly equivalent to decentralization.

The “security” label in Vitalik's trilemma is misleading, it should be called consensus.

Different subsets of the nostr network can optimize along different axes, but they are each subject to the trilemma.

It will have to scale out. It can also scale up, but that will become centralized. Scaling out won't be centralized, but it also won't be visible outside of the bubble.

It's just the trilemma again.

It's a good question. Twitter does petabytes per day. “Free” is out of the question long term, if nostr is successful. There will be monetization, one way or another.

That's outside my wheelhouse but I agree. I know people are thinking about this but it doesn't get discussed publicly enough on here.

My prediction is that this era of free public relays will be short lived lest we fall victim to the tragedy of the commons.

Second prediction is that as nostr grows, there will be clients that are also lightning wallets. This part sucks because they will likely be custodial. If nostr grows beyond bitcoiners, I think someone will see this as an obvious UX improvement to onboard non-bitcoiners who don't want to learn two new things (nostr and bitcoin). I'm not happy about it, but I think this is where things will end up.
