Show of hands:

How many of you know how all the media (pics, vids, etc.) gets disseminated to everyone else that sees all that?

I sort of know. And what I know I don't like.

I dont know...please enlightening me

Part of this depends on what client you are using.

Some clients (apps, or a web app on a browsers) have a pipeline to servers that allow relays to relay notes to other clients when the note is read/seen/rendered.

Other clients have default services that perform the same hosting function.

Some of these services utilize various third party utilities to scan the media for CSAM (primarily). The two utilities that I know of are cloudflare's "AI" tool and Microsoft's PhotoDNA.

Now I don't know about you... But I'm very uncool with cloudflare or MS scanning EVERYTHING that I upload. Granted, I use a VPN (and now TOR), but... No thanks.

I'm with you. 100%. I'm using Amethyst...should I be? 😬

Yup I am #Amethyst and love it 💕

I like it too, I'm just wondering if it's one that's shares data like Beave is speaking about 🤷‍♀️

I was going to be snarky last night when you wrote this since i knew there was absolutely no way youd get a response.

I think it goes without saying at this point though.

Eh, Vitor is responsive about the things he is focused on currently. Not so much anything else.

Lol hence the lack of late night snark.

Nostr.build is the default host for media. They use both cloudflare and MS.

You determine if that's an issue.

I'm just trying to raise people's awareness of a pretty gaping hole in informed consent.

I'm with you there. I'm looking forward to the day my company can offer sovereign personal content hosting for every Internet user (optionally on your own hardware if you want. Or not). We need some time, but that's one of our core goals.

I look forward to this.

Nostr build excuse is really lame too. "Cloudflare is just how things work"

Oh ok, so weve got this decentralized thing but lets plug it into the Evilcorp machine

That's really the crux of why this is so upsetting!

I have a nearly complete picture. Got questions?

So what would be the best alternative?

I do not know yet, aside from figuring out how to host your own, which is risky if you don't know how to do it a securely as necessary, and I don't. Yet.

It's just https right? With all the centralization, tracking ability, censorship, mutability etc that comes with that.

For now, yes, though I am looking forward to the development of nostr stuff being transmitted on nostr specific stuff. That will be very good since bypassing typical web traffic is a very good thing IMO.
