i originally thought likes were unnecessary on nostr. now i think they seriously hurt the core functioning of nostr. nostr will suffer as long as the like button stays on clients by default.

I would just have a look and find out how to remove only notifications for likes. Likes should be likes, not nuicance.
Zaps have different uses/functions. The way likes are implemented should be modified.

There are so many post types and user types that an attempt to do only one thing masterfully will stifle engagement in a bulk of other potential interactions.
As people, we engage in many ways.
Zaps cover spending for value.
Likes cover a friendly laugh or nod.
Dislikes cover social disapproval.
Emoji responses cover many expressions.
I love zapping as a way to show I value a comment. BUT, the more options for reacting to content the better. Nostr should be for everyone, even those who are more comfortable liking or commenting than zapping.

Plus zaps amounts are not a good global measuring stick for value. 1k sats coming from someone in the US might feel like pocket change for them, but the same amount from a poorer LATAM or African country could be significantly more.
A like, boring as it is, requires the same amount of energy, no matter where you are.
Agreed. For those who can’t or won’t zap, getting a like from them is better than getting no response at all.
