If nip5 doesnโt verify anything and is only used to find you, do we even need it then? Is npub not sufficient at locating people?
Discussion
Agreed and disappointed to see stuff like this:
Would like to just send sats not โverifyโ

How do you stop randomly generated keys? Adding this extra step reduces spam of free tier. And nip-05 does verify that you have access to the domain (paid or whatever) that you have there. Try spoofing mine ๐ถ๐พ๐ซก
Yeah but if no one knows what your domain is; why bother? As I type this I donโt know yours. You could be fake for all I know. The only indication to me is that Iโm already following you and your follower count is not zero
True! But for brands and companies that will definitely matter ๐ถ๐พ๐ซก
i like supporting nostr plebs, thatโs about it
It's much more ergonomic imo, and helps with impersonation a little bit.
I wonder if thatโs true. I hardly know anyoneโs nip5. I do like the โfollowingโ label but the way clients implement it now is not very clear.
I know Jack's NIP05 will be cashapp or block domain as an example, he's got a lot of impersonators that get retweeted all the time
So weโre doing it mostly for high profile people?
I kinda think of it like a vanity plate on a car too. I rock mine to support nostr:npub138s5hey76qrnm2pmv7p8nnffhfddsm8sqzm285dyc0wy4f8a6qkqtzx624
Verification is a very wrong word for it though. Human readable handle or DNS handle seems better to me.

It's a good way to find someone. We changed the name by consensus a few months ago to "nostr address". It could be compared to email or DNS servers, they are expendable but more convenient for the end user.
And micro celebrities like nostr:npub137c5pd8gmhhe0njtsgwjgunc5xjr2vmzvglkgqs5sjeh972gqqxqjak37w and nostr:npub1jk9h2jsa8hjmtm9qlcca942473gnyhuynz5rmgve0dlu6hpeazxqc3lqz7
Of course. Yes. Legends!
Lol! nostr:npub1r0rs5q2gk0e3dk3nlc7gnu378ec6cnlenqp8a3cjhyzu6f8k5sgs4sq9ac and nostr:npub1utx00neqgqln72j22kej3ux7803c2k986henvvha4thuwfkper4s7r50e8 are THE legends! ๐ถ๐พ๐คฃ๐ซ
10000000%!! ๐ซ
For example if you are on a podcast and you want to tell ppl to follow you on nostr
You mean you donโt want to spell out your npub?! Whereโs the PoW?! ๐
Fair point
Nip5 verifies users that use their own domains to host their nip5. No one else has a bitpins nip5
It verifies that the domain "knows" you somehow and you are somehow associated with it.
And to find people you can say "Follow me on nostr, I'm mike@mikedilger.com" and that works because nip05 contains my pubkey and the relays that I'm at.
This can easily be games with typo domains if the target is worth it.
But yeah, helpful when asking to follow.
I'm still in pushing for a Nomen address by nostr:npub19pw5egjuhcsfsv42zkjtjs6nhpm69lnv8w2dacdyez7rvacrqnds6xjtwk . I'm hoping a client adds it. Already registered a my name and attached my npub to it.
Where can I learn more?
Nvm found it
imo it's awesome. I just recorded my name on Bitcoin, and attached my NPUB to it.
What's the end result, in regards to #nostr id/handle? If a client adds it, you just search for "Freakoverse" and that's it. That's me.
There are more uses to Nomen btw (Bitcoin naming solution, website domain solution, prob other uses as well).
I'm planning on talking with nostr:npub19pw5egjuhcsfsv42zkjtjs6nhpm69lnv8w2dacdyez7rvacrqnds6xjtwk whenever he has the time to discuss Nomen and more, whenever he has the time (he's not on here much).
Human readable addresses for lookups are pretty convenient
