I guess you can run a #bitcoin node and a lightning node on VPS

I don’t really want to invest in my own rig

Maybe sure to research a bit on securing a Linux install. A lightning node with any amount of Bitcoin on it is a juicy target, and you will have to enable remote management connections, being a VPS and all. Local solutions are easier to secure, because you can expose only the Bitcoin connection to the Internet, keeping the management local only.

Or run just a lightning node and connect to someone’s bitcoin node?

Security precautions still apply. You don't want anyone else having access to your node. If that happens you could easily lose money.

If you are using someone else's Bitcoin node you are trusting them to tell you the truth about the state of the blockchain. It's probably better to run your own as well. Pick the node you trust carefully if you do this.

Running a VPS securely is possible, but if I was inexperienced with Linux I would do a lot of research first.

for that research

I can't recommend the Megalithic docs enough

☝️ Yes, read all this first.

It does sound like you're a good candidate for nostr:nprofile1qqsf07zg4hxyccnkdp07fppxmetpfzru3fg6mgzx3nk8r7af8qnjjygpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3ezucnfw33k76twv4ezuum0vd5kzmqpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumrpdejq52q4x7

its custodial (they hold the keys!)

but you can create, destroy and manage your own node in a nice UI for not a lot of sats.

you pay for uptime.

i started using and keep shilling it to people like me who are principled and WANT to like LN

but aren't unwilling to compromise a little 😅
