It's hard to overstate how insanely excited I was for the Nintendo 64 when it came out.
I played Super Mario 64 in a Blockbuster Video store, and was totally blown away by moving a character through a completely 3D smooth environment including all sorts of acrobatics that Mario could do.

My favorite was the original Super Smash, which I continued up through the Wii. One of the few video game series I was seriously good at.
Goldeneye for the 64 was great. Starfox. Mario. Zelda. Mario Kart.

Crazy powerful, third fastest character but the up B was a major advantage for getting back from the edge.

I had a similar experience, my friends got an N64 for Christmas and I literally think when I first played it it was one of the most bewildering experiences of my life😂. Probably like old time people seeing a picture of themselves for the first time

Great pick, Lyn! One of the classics that holds up very well.
Golden Eye hasn’t aged well and, to me, is incredibly overrated. I bet if most people went back to play a non-emulated version of it, they’d turn it off immediately. Perfect Dark, however, is essentially the better version of GoldenEye with (really tough) bots for multiplayer, a far more interesting alien conspiracy driven cyberpunk setting, and an expanded arsenal including more gadgets than Golden Eye and alt fire options for every single weapon. My friends and I would play against the bots for hours! Yet Perfect Dark is always overshadowed by Golden Eye. My guess is nostalgia makes people less objective but also because Golden Eye is a well liked Bond movie so people remember it more.
Super Smash is great and self contained whereas - despite my love for Perfect Dark - it and Golden Eye were stepping stones toward Halo solidifying console shooters into the mainstream.
Yeah, our dad waited in line to get one before christmas for me & Guy. They had bought us the Nintendo & Super Nintendo & had almost decided that there wasn't enough of a difference to justify getting another one, but we all saw the playable display in Target & I remember that they were even amazed by it & kinda realized it was something special.
I remember saving up for an N64 with my buddy, Dave, and purchasing one together. We had joint custody of it but we hung out all the time so it was chill. Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, 007 Golden Eye, and Donkey Kong were all we needed.

Crazy how large the game world was, and how good (relatively speaking) the graphics were given an n64 cartridge is only 64 megabytes

Goldeneye, Mario kart, Bajo kazooie, starfox. I was hooked. Everyday after school I'd play at least an hour of n64 with my family and friends. So much fun.

For me it was just a regular Nintendo that got me sleepless waiting for the day so I could play Super Mario and Kung-Fu. Great times!

Hoo boy is this a doozy. I remember playing some of the new consoles at the time in the late 00's, to maybe mid 10's. I'm primarily a 10's kid, so I knew of all the new video game tech back then. That was my thing back in the day. Nowadays, I am not so much a console guy, and not getting into videogames as much. TTRPG's are a thing for now, and I think it's for the better.
