Sometimes it's a better layout for reading. I used to use it more when I used my phone as an emulator for games.
If I happen to be laying down for any reason, landscape is much nicer.

If you have a legitimate phablet then landscape is easier to use, otherwise it's a rotation game for me.

I know what you're getting at but though most people use portrait most of the time, there are so many exceptions the outliers almost match the middle.
From landscape photography to reading small print, the exceptions all add up.
I use it for video watching, editing photos, reading stuff with smaller print that doesn't zoom well, like research papers & archived book pages.
Filming. Reading.
Easier than rotating the television 90 degrees on the wall to get a snapshot of the frame.
