Yeah, the cost to send outside America is *insane*. I paid 80$ just to send a wallet in France recently.

We're somewhere in Asia, and on top of the outrageous shipping costs to this country, we get charged import duties here too, and then have to pay for a third party contractor who charges through the nose, and demands copies of passports, visas, and rental agreements, before coming back at their leisure (usually DAYS later) with the already opened package, and charging an extra "holding fee" for the privilege of the delay.

With certain items it honestly sometimes works out cheaper and less hassle to jump on a bus or plane over the border...

It is not.

There are ways around it if you're friendly with government workers or embassy personnel, but we reserve favours for emergencies.

Damn that's crazy. There is duty import fees here too but it's all pretty straight forward and the package is never opened.

Yes it is bad, especially in island nations where the customs people have more power and wealth than the elected officials (for the most part.)
