nostr:npub1235tem4hfn34edqh8hxfja9amty73998f0eagnuu4zm423s9e8ksdg0ht5 is an incredible project. Pixel is solid hardware. Android's relative openness is impressive. So far, I'm glad I made the switch.

But Android UX is stone age compared to iOS. Amazed Google haven't done more to close the gap.

Engineering vs creative cultures.

When did you make the transition? I’ve been planning the switch for sometime but haven’t committed.

Anything you would have done differently? How long did it take you to migrate all the important apps?

I'm two weeks in. Haven't sold the iPhone yet, but I'm down to picking it up once or twice a day.

The docs are thorough, if terse and not without gaps. So, I'd have read more up front.

Synchronicity. I was just deciding on getting a Pixel 9 Fold for my birthday and switch to Graphene. Would love to hear what are the trade offs. Also do you happen to have a solid guide for making the switch. I've been using Android for +8 years.

If you plan on not installing google play services you will no longer get push notifications and a large number of apps won't work. But if you focus on finding open source alternatives its great.

It's hard to summarize. There will be many small adjustments, and maybe a few big ones, depending on how hardcore you want to be. I reject the "open source or nothing" approach. Nice ideal. Great way to fail out of the gate.

I'm using Google Play + Play Services for maps, Android Auto, banking apps, etc. I'm also slowly moving to PWAs where practical and testing FOSS alternatives.

The toughest bit so far is family sharing: photos, lists, reminders. Work in progress.

Step by step.

I used GrapheneOS for over a year and I am so tempted to go back however it breaks NFC and fiat banking so badly I just can't bring myself to do it.

Sadly, I am just far too dependant on "tap to pay."

With Google Play Services, I've had zero banking app problems.

Tap to pay loss is a drag, but now I just use a card that I carry, anyway.

I don't have the option of using a physical card. Neo banking in Canada is a bit of a joke.

The other drawback of GrapheneOS is the camera app has struggled immensely to keep up with stock Android.

I presume it is better now, but when I used GrapheneOS it was horrible. There was a time where you couldn't even take pictures.

It is a tough sell to get people to unlock the bootloader of your $1000 phone only for their phone to half work.

No card. That is extreme.

Regarding GrapheneOS camera, it's not awful, but it's not Google. So I use the Google camera app.

I think it's partially culture shock. I felt the same when I first switched but now realize a lot of it was because I was used to iOS.

I feel this, familiarity has a lot to do with it. As a long time Android user I'm constantly frustrated by iOS anytime I have to interact with it.

Muscle memory is one thing. I'm referring to objectively bad design choices. There just isn't the same level of thoughtfulness.

Hm. Maybe I haven't used iOS enough, but I've never noticed the same. What stands out between iOS and Android?

Radio buttons are non-standard, screen edges bleed out of rounded display corners, wildly different, application of core OS design elements and widgets. To name a few. :)

"Facts! It’s wild how some designs just miss the mark, right? 🤔 What do you think is the biggest design fail you've seen lately?"

I've never had an iPhone, but i've tried iOS on a friends iPhone for some minutes and i felt the UX was way inferior, even for simple tasks
