The Blocksize Wars Review:

Increasing the block size limit became a divisive topic within the Bitcoin community from 2015-2017. This lead to the emergence of two opposing factions:

those who wanted to increase the block size limit (big blockers) and those who believed doing so would compromise the decentralization and security of the network (small blockers).

Small blockers were for the people 'controlling' Bitcoin and for computer science principles.

Big blockers were for businesses or large entities 'controlling' Bitcoin.

This was the only period when I had existential concerns for #Bitcoin. BitMain was extremely powerful at the time and pushed all in.

miners definitely had power. i didn't know that SlushPool was originally for Bitcoin XT.

I remember it fragmenting the community. It was a distraction. A divide and conquer that ultimately failed. It's when Roger Ver fell from grace and Craig Wright rose as Faketoshi. Wild ride.

Can you explain why big blocks are beneficial to large entities?

My understanding is that big blocks increase the hardware requirements to run a full node. As the Blockchain grows larger, you would need hundreds of terabytes of storage capacity to hold the entire Blockchain. It would get so large that only large orgs or very rich people could afford to run a node.

it's not the fact that larger blocks are beneficial to larger entities, it's that increasing the size of the blocks over time to several gigabytes in size would make it impossible for your average user to run a node, making the majority of Bitcoin nodes reside in datacenters, like Ethereum, instead of people's homes and devices. large entities or large players would now be in control. and this is exactly how it played out over the last several years with Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Scam Version. the small blockers were right.
