Today I was given the honor of specing my wifeโ€™s work computer.

Going to microcenter with an open budget almost. ๐Ÿ˜…

Hit me with your best desktop build. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thinkpad (refurb)

Need something new and extremely robust.

Must be a desktop able to handle crazy workloads.

Joking of course.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Happy to explore.

Team ryzen

You think I should go Ryzen route?

I was thinking i9.

Ryzen way better value imo, they also support ecc ram

Shes going to need...

2x nvidia rtx 4090

Ryzen 9 7900x

128 gb ddr5 ram

Asus tuf b850 mobo

2x Samsung 990 pro 4 tb

Have fun

Oh, I did not consider getting to GPUs. Great idea!

I forgot thatโ€™s even an option. I havenโ€™t built a pc since I was 16 ๐Ÿ˜‚

Of course she needs gpus. Shes trying to keep the company's data secure by running local llms and those require some power ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

This is pretty open ended? Best is like a threadripper or Epyc with ECC, stacks of the fastest nvme drives, and graphics card of suitable grunt. Usually a prebuilt small form machine that is quiet is the best work machine though unless you actually need the horsepower. They can pack a fast machine into a quiet small case these days.

Needs to be a powerful.

Mostly will run Navisworks: https://www.autodesk.com/products/navisworks/overview with data centers and huge factories doing clash detection and other things I donโ€™t understand.

Needs to run Revvit: https://www.autodesk.com/products/revit/overview

Most of the time these two simultaneously, while doing a whole bunch of other stuff.

They run a lot of 3D in the browser for their clients. Chrome and edge use 16gb ram alone ๐Ÿ˜…

I would lean to threadripper as gaming desktop shit does not have enough PCIE lanes. My old desktop now server is threadripper and the lanes are the best feature, multiple graphics cards and fast drives no problem, more capacity for ram. Just cost more thatโ€™s the only downside.

Just sit me down with a m4 Mac mini and Iโ€™m good
