Freedom is not free (and more expensive than 1000 sats one time) and we will see even more beloved relays close down overtime.
We need more plebs running their own relays and more clients doing relay discovery.
Thousands of people all relying on a handful of relays is not the winning formula for nostr. That is neither decentralized or censorship resistant or economically viable.

I'm strongly in favor of this decentralized protocol community, but I have no idea what a node is or how I would go about setting one up.
where could someone go to learn such things efficiently?
Easiest way is to use relaying.io and get one in one click.
Second easiest way to to learn how to use docker and cloudflare tunnels then you can run one from home.

I am very interested in setting up a home/private relay for my own learning purposes. Perhaps with more information and understanding, I would be inclined to run a public relay. I am an old man taken to dabbling in technology after I retired many years ago. I have been able to follow recipes for setting up and running BitCoin nodes and Lightning Nodes on my raspberry pi. I have not yet found a simple recipe or a private home Nostr Relay. Any references would be appreciated.

Someone needs to write a step by step guide on how to setup a relay. I mean I buy a VPS, then do what?
Educational content is less IMO. We need more written content to educate medium level tech knowledgeable people like me.
