yeah, i am also frequently wondering why some people - even freedom-oriented ones - have a rather positive opinion on authocratic governance forms such as dictatorships or monarchies.
besides the referendum system, the swiss model has an additional feature i like: the primate of politics. there are very few topics in which judges can overrule the people's decisions.
of course, the swiss model cannot be simply transferred to other countries. each nation has its own particularities. nonetheless, in my opinion, a democracy which does not allow its citizens to constantly control and in case necessary overrule its politicians by direct democracy, is not a complete democracy.
one thing that people tend to overlook: the suiss people did not get their political system for free, or at once. it was an incremental process during which a lot of people died in several waves of revolutionary uprisings. the ruling class conceded their power only under pressure and slice by slice to the people.
