New Zealand has no air defense systems. We are just as vulnerable as Palestine and Lebanon are. Any beligerant nation could just fly bombers down here and start bombing the sheep and there is nothing we could do about it.

The United States has subsidized defense of all allies for decades.
The services in all US ally countries is going to experience strain (likely will many will unwind at some point) as the U.S. becomes more insolvent and the dollar loses trust / purchasing power more rapidly.
The fake free stuff era of US allies is coming to an end.
Yes well without US defending NZ, NZ won't be taking direction from the US. Same thing happening in Europe. Europe always believed the US wanted to run the show. But now the US wants them to do their own defense, which means the US loses the ability to direct Europe. I'm fine with it.
