While at a client's location, I noticed this sizable morel coming from the bottom of this burn pile. 😍

A common technique for finding morels is to visit an area of forest that burned two years prior.

Morel mycellium are mycorrhizal (they live in/on plant root systems), and continue living after the burn. When they realize their necessary companion, the tree, is dead, they grow fruiting bodies (mushrooms) that can send spores to areas that have proper habitat to continue the species.

The more I learn about fungi the more amazing they are

Have you heard about the cicada zombie fungus that gets them high on amphetamines so they'll have more sex, creating more zombies?

No! Sounds like that thing that grows out of ants (or was it beetles?) heads and makes them crazy.

First heard of mycorrhizal term from nunya a lil while ago. Was involved in directing nutrient traffic from one area to another at variable "rates" and even dondevt accounting of some sort I think

Cordycepts are known to take over ants, moths, etc. There are various species. I was growing Cordycepts militaris for a bit. It's a great supplement for humans. It can help with DNA repair (via ADP), and has been reported to "reverse" autism.

That's different than the cicada drug sex zombie fungus, Massospora.

Cordyceps are equally horrifying! I couldn’t believe my mother made me eat them when I was a child! 😂

I'd heard the benefits though. From Joe Rogan first long ago when he would shill them on show. Tried some once, seemed ok but never got more

Ive only learnt about what cordyceps are few years ago, I swore I will never take them again even if it would make me immortal! 😂 . I was told the cordyceps sold in the market these days are of very low quality, so becareful if you want to get more…

Yeah, I see some occasionally sold at farmers market, would probably pick some up there if I were going to do it.

🤦‍♀️ TIL: zombie cicada is a type of cordyceps !!

Nice! Morels are hard to find here unfortunately.

That’s a nice one. Enjoy.

I also get disturbed soil morels. A year after digging in a spot or having a burn pile morels pop up. I also in early spring drive around to the local camp grounds and check for morels in the bbq pits. I can find pounds this way and I don’t have to drive to the east side of the cascades.
