They're brickets - they suck balls to light. You'll get em eventually although.

I don't know what's in em, but they stink. You want lump charcoal (in the black bag at the supermarket). It's cheaper to pick up lump charcoal at bunnings though.

They're refinery waste. To light them, either pour a lot of petroleum over them (not a particularly good idea), or with a lot of those waxed-cardboard lighting sticks. Pointing a leaf blower at it (low power mode) helps a lot.

Yeah air compressor, hair dryer or blower helps.

Those things put me off charcoal grilling initially. I don't know why they're so popular.
