I never understood why there’s a difference between an Americano and a “normal” coffee.

An Americano is an espresso, so grinded coffeebeans, small amount of water, then more water is added.

“normal” coffee is grinded coffeebeans with a fair amount of water.

What’s up with that?

Why are they two seperate things? 😂

food science. I can imagine the flavours are different. a coffee bean has many different flavour compounds, each dissolved under different pressure and heat etc. probably.

Americano: You brew an espresso, add water after brewing.

Normal coffee (Or lungo): You use more water during the brewing process.

There's a whole science behind it and a very deep rabbit whole of coffee grinding, brewing etc.

If not already familiar, you should watch James Hoffmann on YT ;)

I had no idea! But thanks for clarifying

🤷‍♂️Regular coffee for me.

Same to you man! 😀

At first it seems weird, Americano is just a long coffee made with a rich, concentrate espresso dilute with water 😅 but at the end the flavors are different if it's made the right way.

Espresso use a special blend (more rich in oils) with fine grinding, it use high pressure and more heat to extract all the flavors of the coffee in few seconds.

Normal coffee, also called drip coffee is made with all kind of blend with medium grinding. It use only hot water, a filter and liquid drip by gravity, It takes several minutes for the coffee to brew in the hot water.

Now this is the kind of explanation I needed haha.

So I can imagine that these giant coffeemachines at some workplaces or stations get it all wrong when it comes to espresso/ristretto/americano/coffee

Yes most of these automatic coffee machines use only 1 type of coffee to make all sorts of beverages so the taste is always the same.

Plus, if you see the inside of these machines, you'll never use them again 😅 some are really dirty.

I kinda wish I didn’t know that last part 😅 however, they seem to clean the one at my job on a regular basis
