There's a sentiment on Nostr that likes & reaction are bad, but I honestly think follower count, and the thirst people have for it is far worse. Other than being used for Internet dick measuring I'm not sure what it is useful for. Influencers setting ad rates maybe? 😂

Definitely for ads. I think the thirst for followers is tied to the thirst for likes and reactions. I guess npubs want to feel seen and heard. You need to put in work for that to happen though 🤷🏾
It's a sad leftover from legacy social media. I hope someday I can have separate lists categorizing people I follow for different reasons, and have the option to keep them private if I want. Rather than a public follower list, I could have a public "people I trust" list.
*public follow list
i would like that as well. even though it's kind of a legacy social media feature. it's a good one though.
Why private?
The *option* to make it private. Nostr is all about freedom. I should be able to follow someone without them knowing. I already can with a different npub.
Im just wondering what’s the added benefit? To not interact with them?
Following is seen as an approval of that npub by some. If this is the case, there are people I want to follow, but not signal that approval.
That's what a trusted people list would be for.
Ah like following an npub because it challenges your views? Something like that?
That, and any other number of reasons. I see no benefit of pumping follower counts. If it is a useless metric, why feed it?
What is a good reason for not having private follows, in addition to public ones?
I don’t know. I don’t mind having them public (the ones that challenge my views or others). Having the option is good I guess. Private would make it harder to catch the scammers with multiple npubs though
Another reason I see is for web of trust. Just because I follow someone for content doesn't mean I trust them. A seperate and public list of people I trust would be more useful for that, people I know IRL, or have had extended interactions online could be added to that.
Private follow lists already exist, the function just isn't exposed well in clients yet.
There’s an easier way than private follows for that. On Nostur, you can create custom lists. I could have a list for hammers for examples where I have a bunch of npubs that talk about hammers. They don’t come into my web of trust like my follows
Lists should be implemented more widely imo
Cool, I hope it comes to more clients. And lists already have public and private options in the nip, so why not expose that functionality too. I don't see why people shouldn't have the choice.
Some examples where I think private follows would be useful:
My family & IRL friends and contacts. I could keep them in private lists. That way if someone wants to attack me for something I've said online they don't have immediate access to my friends and loved ones to harass.
Working on secret projects. If I was in a group working on something that I didn't want revealed yet, a private list could help keep the fact we are even working together out of the public eye.
Whistleblowers. I don't even think this needs explanation.
Please note I'm not saying it should be mandatory, or even default. Just an option. I think the positives would far outweigh any negatives.
We need new things to measure. Would love to flip the fiat metrics upside down.
A list of recent active interactions. jb55 posted a note about it this morning. I think it's a great idea.
Yeah, would also like to see the date of last interaction. We could use this to create new profile stats too probably. Get rid of legacy crap.
Right now I have to manually check every person I follow if they are active it’s ridiculous.
its so dumb
There is a tool for that!
Why unfollow them if they are inactive?
i wonder about this as well. if it's not a negative on my feed, i will leave it be. maybe they're taking a break?
I already have a large follow list thanks to bad habits when I first joined Nostr. This is a simple tool to trim users who don't add anything to my feed. Nostr has an incredibly high rate of people who join for a short time and never return, so it makes sense to me. If they return and are worth following, I'll find them again. I'm not worried about digital collections of people, be it who I follow, or who follows me.
I also run my own web of trust relay. Users that haven't been around in a while aren't maintaining their follow list, and this affects who is allowed to post notes to my relay. This helps manage that as well.
it makes a lot of sense for your use case. i get it.
It’s very inaccurate.
