What happened to us? We are becoming poorer and poorer.

modern stuff isn't as creepy

Time scarcity - no time to appreciate or craft beautiful things

We've been invaded.

Literally fiat 🤙

Bauhaus

A different civilization that has been hidden from us and erasure of it takes place right in front of us.

No lies detected.

I'm not even sure it's a money/fiat issue, even if you pay the price you get shit nowadays. No way you can get a house with shape around your doors and windows, or withgood quality stone walls, you better get up early to find someone doing furniture with carved design around the edge while it was in every home 50 years ago. Most CRT TV from the 90s, if not trashed away, are worked fine today, good luck finding one that last a decade without issues or software obsolescence. The very first Nintendo NES and GameBoy are working fine today while Nintendo DS have cartridges failing after 10-15 years and even first Switch from less than 8 years ago have a lot of battery issues and most joystick failing but high 3nd electronics are failing even faster when not getting software obsolete.

Something got very wrong, we pushed too far to save 10, 20, 30% while paying 2, 3, 5 times more down the line be renewing everything more often.

We went from rich people having fancy stuff (back then) to common folk having not common stuff for everyone. It’s cost reduction and capitalism and not people not wanting beautiful stuff.

Capitalism chases margins, not masterpieces. Beauty is expensive, and private interest has no room for it.

It’s not a function of money as much as the fact that post industrialization people live busier lives now and want spaces that calm them or are more functional. When people live calmer lives they have a lot more time to dedicate to ornamentation.

Also the comparison is flawed because usually the nicest stuff lasts longer and serves as a distorted reference point.
